The Sound of Tinnitus

Posted on 09/29/2022 5:39:22 AM PDT by far sider

Hello tinnitus, my old friend
You've come to sing to me again
I hear the sound of dentists drilling
Of sinks of water over-filling
And the sound is ringing in my brain
It will remain
It is the sound of tinnitus

In restless dreams, I hear the tone
I know I’ll never be alone
You’re always there when I wake up
You say we never will break up
When I lay down my head to sleep at night
After I turn out the light
I miss the sound of silence

They say they’re searching for a cure
Ten thousand doctors, maybe more
After many years of coping
Tell me, should I just stop hoping
That someday they’ll find a way to stop sounds I dread
When I am dead
I’ll hear the sound of silence

Other people do not know
Tinnitus like a cancer grows
I remember when you would annoy me
Now you're trying to destroy me.
Or maybe, you just want to be my friend
Should I pretend
To like the sound of tinnitus

How many times I’ve bowed and prayed
That God would make the noises fade
I must not let self-pity fill me
I know that this disease can’t kill me
It’s the cross I must bear, many others have to bear much worse
It is my curse
To hear the sound of tinnitus

My new hearing aids have an anti-tinnitus feature that sometimes eliminates tinnitus in some people. They haven’t turned that on for me yet ... they have to fine tune the things as much as possible first.

Both ears. Very high pitched whistling. It began in January 2021.

Thanks for the good reply. I can relate. I’m almost 72 and have a similar background with guns since I was very young and time as a grunt in Nam with all that entails.

You beat me in the music.

Sounds like you have a pretty bad case of it. (no pun intended)

Yeah, I do. It never goes away. I've learned to sleep in spite of it.

I used to be a sound engineer for a lot of rock bands back in the day. I’d bet good money mine has much to do with that!

Me, too. I sleep w/noise machine now, but it rarely “bothers” me; I don’t know what it’s like to not have the ringing there.

Not a thing changed. My tinnitus is getting slowly worse. I’m not sure of the cause. Lots of shooting in the past. Also chemo 15 years ago that caused nerve damage in random areas of my body especially extremities. I’m in my early 50s so who knows how it will or will not progress.

I’m tired of saying huh to my lovely bride. I also wish she wouldn’t try talking to me from the other room and not even facing my direction. I find my brain focused on the ringing so when someone starts to talks to me my brain misses the first few words before focusing on them.

I had the fillings removed due to them damaging the teeth. The old fillings were causing cracks in the top surface. In the old days they put huge fillings in. In addition, the saving about teeth care and chemotherapy appears to be true in my case. Teeth weren’t great but not terrible before it but 5 crowns later ….

Maybe your outcome will be different. Good luck.

Have had it for many years. It’s usually a high pitched sound. I had ear infections regularly as a kid. The doctor used to come to the house and give me a shot of penicillin in the butt. Ended up having my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 5. I’m 75 now. I believe mine has been caused, and/or worsened by prescription medications I have to take for various things like hypothyroidism and hypertension being just two of them. It’s worse in my left ear, which is surprising since the eardrum in my right ear was punctured when I was in my 20’s. Periodically I get the sound of what I describe as glass crystals clinking in my left ear. If it starts when I’m in bed, it will stop if I turn on my left side. I’ve had hearing tests, and been told that I have small ear canals.

"I have a theory that tinnitus is caused (in some/most cases) by Mercury fillings."

That's interesting. Not sure if I have any of those left in my mouth. Had a couple of permanent bridges installed over the years that may have eliminated all of them.

Yep, have always had it so doesn’t bother me but it is more noticeable now at 60 than as a kid. Still, it is the sound of silence to me. It does get worse with alcohol but that’s it and drops back later.

"I don't watch much TV, just like to hear it when I do."

I've been watching TV shows and movies with subtitles for many years. The sound in today's TV program and movies is absurd. The music and sound effects are always much louder than when people are speaking. I got tired of turning the volume up and down, so I just watch with subtitles. I also watch a lot of British programming, and with the different dialects from the different regions, you need to use subtitles so you can understand what they are saying.
