Over the last several years, my liberal friends have become less and less comfortable with utilizing classical debating styles — you know, where one person proposes a theory, explains it thoroughly with facts and figures and then responds to any questions about the theory in a logical, rational way. This article develops a theory on why the vast majority of all liberals are currently atrocious debaters.
My wife and I have been lucky. We have developed many close friendships with lots of people over our lives. Some of these relationships are more recent, but many have lasted 20, 30, or even 40 years. We have over a dozen friends whom we try to stay in close contact with on a regular basis. About half of them are liberal; about half of them are conservative. Virtually no one seems to be dead in the middle anymore.
Recently, a new trend started to become obvious. For my conservative friends, roughly half of all their friends share conservative values, and half are liberal. But our liberal friends tend to have just one or two conservative friends, and they are no longer able to discuss political issues with their conservative friends, since the liberals tend to get too emotional when talking politics.
It is my belief that this inability to discuss political issues is because my liberal friends look only at online sites that share their worldview; they watch only TV news that reinforces their worldview; they discuss politics only with people who share their worldview; and they often look at social media that make them think the liberal view on a topic is the only rational one to have.

The article’s analysis is interesting but misses the point:

You no longer need facts, figures, or history to defend your position because any position you take is automatically good because YOU are good. This keeps them from honestly examining their policies, which is why they end up doing such monstrous things. And it’s why they get heated when you debate them: in their eyes you are not arguing a point, you are challenging their worth as a person.

True. I can remember when a lot of folks on the right praised certain people like Mattis and Barr and Comey and all the rest that turned out out be shills for the left and tried to force Trump out of office or not prosecute Hillary and her gang etc. Even on FR people were praising these people for being upright, honest and how they were going to do the right thing. Never happened and the praisers changed their tune when their heroes let them down. It happens to all of us.

Your comment is so very true. This happens on Free Republic consistently. Pro-Putin Freepers become belligerent when posted issue is discussed. This is their consistent reaction & easily verified by checking their accumulated posts in “In Forum.”
No one is ‘against them as individuals. However, if you disagree with their prospective you will be ridiculed.

Just what is it about conservatism that is inconsistent? Conservatism is based on tried and true policies. Liberalism is inconsistent.
Case in point: “Sanctuary Cities”- what is it about liberals’ behavior recently in that regard that is consistent?
Where is conservatism inconsistent? We can back up what we believe with facts, not feelings.
You can literally feel the condescension from liberals in such a discussion. There is a moral superiority that precludes their need to defend their points (or even present them).
They are good because they are liberal and take the knee-jerk liberal position (i.e., party line) no matter what the issue.
You (and I) are bad because we analyze issues to determine the most rational, most effective, and sanest response to any issue.

They’re not going to change my mind and I have lost any interest I may have had in changing theirs. It’s just a waste of time....and from my last look in a mirror, I don’t have much of that left.
The worst part of the liberal equation is the belief that parents don’t have the right to pass down their core values onto their own children.
-But it’s OK for THEM to override parents and teach children a whole new set of values that degrades and destroys traditional values that have always worked.
Even mentioning how they pollute the forum with their daily onslaught of propaganda sends them into orbit. They yap and screech like scalded banshees.

IOW conservatives are constantly bombarded by leftist ideology and activity; leftists can go through their whole life not seeing a conservative perspective unless it is filtered through one of their accepted groups.
Most liberals can’t debate their way out of a paper bag because they were NEVER required to explain their positions. All they were required to do is parrot a line usually fed to them by some media moguls, call anyone who disagreed a “racist” which the media then repeated in a loop, and anyone who disagreed with them cowered in the corner.
Sounds like my brother- he boasts about being balanced and “open minded” by saying he watches Fox News, but always takes the liberal point of view.
My Dad watched ABC, NBC, and CBS because at the time they were the only networks he could watch. He didn’t have cable in his area.
He was a conservative, but he always voted democrat because of the one-sided reporting he watched.
Inside every leftist is a demon.
