Weekly Garden Thread - February 11-17, 2023 [All Things Chicken-Related Edition]
February 11, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 02/11/2023 6:36:18 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I tend to be a teeny bit obsessive. I used to teach workshops in making these and people would drop in for an overnight or a week if they were willing to work as obsessively as I’d require. Tremendous fun.

Here’s the full list. A lot stream only from my website.

https://www.iment.com/maida/tv/songvids/historical-list-of-all-music-videos.htm

One I’m particularly fond of now is:
My Love from the Star - Love Always Runs Away - Lim Young Woong - new translation

A show about an alien who came to earth in historical times, fell in love with an actress, and has to return to his planet, though he keeps trying to return to earth.

https://youtu.be/PB9TbWXPA7Y

I’m always bothered by translations of Chinese and Korean lyrics because what I hear doesn’t match the sounds of what I read. So I did a comparison of all the translations of the lyrics for this I could find - that showed me how much leeway I had for translation - then created a new translation that matched the syllables and stresses so listening and reading becomes much more relaxing. And, no, I know no Korean. Just used common sense.

Remember, these images come FROM professional productions. I just edit them into secondary art pieces. I don’t use continuous footage. I’ll slice what looks to be a single scene into myriad tiny pieces to match music beats.

I have been saving eggshells in the freezer and had accumulated a gallon bag plus another half gallon. The bags have been annoying me lately because I keep shifting them around to make room for other things in the freezer. Inspired by the chicken edition thread, I decided it was time to get rid of those shells so I baked them and then ground them up in my blender. I now have a pint jar of ground eggshells.

The eggshell ‘dust’ is something that can be consumed as a source of calcium either by people or pets. I did not take out the membranes which are pure collagen so that is also in the dust. What I will most likely use the dust for is when planting tomatoes, adding a couple tablespoons to mix in the dirt.

Two more major kitchen projects remain on the to-do list. I need to make two batches of Blackberry Merlot jelly and I also have hog fat to render into lard.

I am going to do the same and avoid pushing to get the first pepper and the first tomato . (Although I purchased a couple of really early varieties and still have Stupice in my seed collection.)

I thought I might try that Amish trick with tomatoes and buy some cheap tomatoes from the supermarket and try to get some seeds going in a slice of tomato in a pot of soil! Nutrients & correct PH to get them going?

Predators will always be the worst problem when raising chickens. :(

I just knew you’d be in ‘Clean-Up Mode!’ I dread to think of having all of that ahead of me one day, but Beau already has a friend written into his Will that will help me out for a nice payday. ;)

We have been cleaning out the milking parlor to make way for a chicken coop. I’ve been helping some, but Beau is definitely in charge of this operation. He’s actually quite excited about it, and I am encouraging this behavior from the sidelines, for sure! :)

Having at least the LOWER level of the barn cleaned out and being USEFUL again will be SUCH a blessing!

I smashed up dried eggshells the other day, too. I mix them with Bone Meal in an old ice cream bucket and do as you do for my tomatoes, peppers, zukes and cukes.

Absolutely NO Blossom End Rot on anything. It’s magic!

I have your package ready to mail and will do so when I go to town next week for supplies. The ‘Canary Bird’ Zinnia seeds and a few other hand-crafted surprises are in there for you, to repay you for the BEAUTIFUL finger-less gloves you knitted for me & Mom. I wear them when I’m crocheting; they’re so cozy!

Also - if you do make up that jelly, I would gladly trade you for some of our homemade Maple Syrup if you’re interested. :)

I’ve been considering buying 6 laying hens. I’m sure my sis would love my extra eggs. :)

Eggs don’t grow on trees! They don’t even grow on Eggplant!

Go figure! :)

We always have tomatoes, Italian peppers and squash.
We have been sharing oranges and pomegranates.
My sister loves my excesses. I’m sure she will appreciate the tomatoes and squash when they are available.

I will have to see on the jelly - only makes 5 jars per batch & I have a waiting list. If I have a couple of jars extra from these two batches, we’ll talk! :-)

My niece has blackberries in profusion on her farm & I want to buy some from her to make the jelly this coming year.

So I dropped my phone in the hospital parking lot (trying to carry too much to the car) & cracked the screen (insert appropriate curse words here) - fortunate the phone still works. I checked on getting it replaced because I LOVE this phone. $98 meant a new phone. I bought one Wednesday & made the mistake of turning it on tonight. Wow - my old phone is like from the Stone Age compared to this one. Mom said “why is your face so red?” Lots of STRESS dealing with getting my stuff transferred over. Apps transferred but no data in them. Contacts transferred - phone numbers only, nothing else like addresses & I don’t see where I can even add that info. Very upsetting. The power cord doesn’t have an end to fit in a plug or anything else I have so the phone is now turned off. My brother & SIL have the same make so I will talk to the bro tomorrow & see what is what - he may have a power cord I can use, too. I am pretty good figuring out techie stuff, but right now, I feel pretty “old”.

Old? We both still have flip phones, LOL!

Beau hasn’t seen anything on the cracked screen on his since about 2015.

I ‘upgraded’ last year. Meh. I call my Mom, my sister and my BFFs. That’s all I need it for. I actually USE IT as a PHONE.

I know. That’s odd, LOL! ;)

In the winter months I read through all of my ‘GRIT’ and ‘Mother Earth’ magazines and plan for the upcoming season.

There was an article in the last one I read about training your dog to sniff out antlers.

Of course, now we need a Black Lab or a Golden Retriever, which is FINE with me! :)
