Is arthritis an inevitable part of growing older and what are the ways to prevent it?

Painful, stiff or swollen joints are a common complaint among older adults, and for many, may be the first sign of arthritis - but the condition shouldn’t be an inevitable part of growing older as it can be avoided.

What was once an easy run may feel tougher to complete. Or perhaps a challenging game of tennis might leave your hip or ankle sore for days.

Painful, stiff or swollen joints are a common complaint among older adults — and for many, they’re the first sign of what may feel like an unavoidable diagnosis: Arthritis.

In a 2022 survey of more than 2,200 people between ages 50 and 80 in the United States, 60 per cent said they had been told by a healthcare provider that they had some form of arthritis. And about three-quarters considered joint pain and arthritis a normal part of ageing. But arthritis is not inevitable as we age, said Kelli Dominick Allen, an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Sugar IS a big part of arthritis IMHO, not all, but a good amount.

Mine’s likely hereditary. My mother’s side of the family was and still is a bunch of great people, but for me, inheriting their genes seems roughly like dumping paint into a clean river. So I suspect my arthritis is inherited from that side, too.

And I’m not the only one who believes this. My cousin has actually expressed her own distress at her own son’s genetic inheritance from her and her husband. Cancer genes from the latter person. Again, not knocking the people: they’re kind, loving human beings. But genes don’t care.

Arthritis is a byproduct of inflammation. Inflammation damages your body in more ways than you can count. Control inflammation and you control arthritis.

I’ll be 70 next year and I have no problems with arthritis. There must be other causes.

“Arthritis is a byproduct of inflammation.”

I have never read about this. Would this be activated microglial cells that mediate arthritis inflammation?

“...he’s a genius...”

But he is only partially right. The cause depends on the type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is caused by the wear and tear of the joint over time or because of overuse. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma are caused by the body’s immune system attacking the body’s own tissues. Gout is caused by the buildup of crystals in the joints. Some forms of arthritis can be linked to genes. People with genetic marker HLA-B27 have a higher risk of ankylosing spondylitis. For some other forms of arthritis, the cause is not known.

Some risk factors for arthritis that can’t be avoided or changed include:

Age. The older you are, the more likely you are to have arthritis.

Gender. Women are more likely to have arthritis than men.

Heredity. Some types of arthritis are linked to certain genes.

Risk factors that may be avoided or changed include:

Weight. Being overweight or obese can damage your knee joints. This can make them more likely to develop osteoarthritis.

Injury. A joint that has been damaged by an injury is more likely to develop arthritis at some point.

Infection. Reactive arthritis can affect joints after an infection.

Your job. Work that involves repeated bending or squatting can lead to knee arthritis.

There is no cure for arthritis. The goal of treatment is often to limit pain and inflammation, and help ensure joint function. Treatment plans often use both short-term and long-term methods. Check the article for these methods.
