Is arthritis an inevitable part of growing older and what are the ways to prevent it?

Painful, stiff or swollen joints are a common complaint among older adults, and for many, may be the first sign of arthritis - but the condition shouldn’t be an inevitable part of growing older as it can be avoided.

What was once an easy run may feel tougher to complete. Or perhaps a challenging game of tennis might leave your hip or ankle sore for days.

Painful, stiff or swollen joints are a common complaint among older adults — and for many, they’re the first sign of what may feel like an unavoidable diagnosis: Arthritis.

In a 2022 survey of more than 2,200 people between ages 50 and 80 in the United States, 60 per cent said they had been told by a healthcare provider that they had some form of arthritis. And about three-quarters considered joint pain and arthritis a normal part of ageing. But arthritis is not inevitable as we age, said Kelli Dominick Allen, an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

I have psoriasis and osteoarthritis. I tke 3k mgs a day of turmeric. It works well.

Also saving up for stem-cell therapy (my body’s own) as my med insurance doesn’t cover it.

Living a meat & water only lifestyle means arthritis isn’t a concern for me.

My wife eliminated osteoarthritis (in her shoulders & hands), from her life by following me into the Carnivore lifestyle a month after I began.

“Your job.”

One doctor asked me if I had typed a lot during my life whe I showed him my finger joint arthritis. I was a production typist for decades at 110 WPM. He told me that’s common.

Curcumin and ginger has don it for me. 20 years ago I was on a cane and riding the electric carts at WalMart. Now I get a twinge in one thumb occasionally. Glucosamine & Chondroitin is what I started with and it worked but after a lot of on line research I switched to the spices which are much more pleasant. I mix them with my food or put ginger in tea and coffee.

Thank you very much for this. Certainly worth a try. I have been taking niacinamide (as a glaucoma treatment) for years, but only 500mg per day. Apparently not enough to achieve any anti-arthritic effect.

The recommendation in the video is 3 grams (3000 mg) per day. As far as I have read, there are no adverse effects to niacinamide. So here we go. We’ll see in 3-4 months if there is any beneficial effect.

In the video, from six years ago, Dr. Wright mentioned then ongoing studies of the efficacy of niacinamide on arthritis. We all should see if we can find the results of these studies. If I do, I will post here.

Thank you again.

Along with taking the Curcumin and Ginger I also cut out sweets and sugar and that corn syrup crap. At 54 years old I was looking forward to being crippled but at 76 I have beat arthritis for 20 years.

Some people are genetically prone to arthritis.
Others stress their joints with sports and exercise in attempt to be healthy in exchange for a life in pain.
We must preserve our joints since like tires they have a limited tread life.

Hyaluronic acid. It works. Buy it bulk. Put in water first, it sucks up moisture like crazy.

My husband is taking liquid turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, cayenne, and cat’s claw supplements, plus dried tart cherries. It’s got him off of pain meds.

Yes, that is why I said “not all.” I was told I had RA 20 years ago...took me a year (I refused the diagnosis and need for the $10K a year drugs). Eventually figured out it was hormones.

Yes its the inflammation. Take organic turmeric everyday. You can kiss Advil goodbye. Buy it in bulk online and make your own capsules. The junk you buy at Costco is expensive and does not work. We take it everyday and have very little pain.

"Also saving up for stem-cell therapy (my body’s own) as my med insurance doesn’t cover it."

Prayers for your endeavor. Hope you can get it done soon.

My mother was diagnosed with Lupus back in the late 60's. Back then, they didn't know much about the disease. Even today, I have no idea if their diagnosis was correct. She died of lung cancer in 1990. Lupus is supposed to be hereditary. Many years ago, I was administered an anti-nuclear antigen test, and was found to have some form of auto-immune disease, but not enough to say I had Lupus. The diagnosis for people who fell into that gray line was "non-specific connective tissue disorder." That's when my Rheumatologist put me on the anti-inflammatory Piroxicam.

I bookmarked this thread. I like running, but the arthritis in my knees is causing a strain in my leg muscles, so all these wonderful things being suggested like turmeric and other supplements to stop the pain and inflammation are worth trying in the near future. So I want to find this thread again.
