MILLER LITE CARB DAY Friday, May 26 at 11:00am on Peacock network.

A bit of history:

For those that don't know Carb Day was the last chance to make any final adjustments to the engine fuel mixture and tuneup back in the days when the cars still used Carburetors before Fuel Injection replaced them. It was also the last chance for making any changes and adjustments to the cars.

These days it is the last chance to fine tune the setup of the car's suspension, make sure that the drivetrain has no leaks or other problems before Sunday's Indy 500.

End that history lesson.

It’s racing. It’s rock ‘n roll. It’s pure bliss. Miller Lite Carb Day is the ultimate turbo boost into the greatest weekend in racing! This high-octane party features some of the most exciting action on (and off) the track as the world revs its engines for the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. Let’s get Back to Rock Friday, May 26.

JEWEL TO PERFORM NATIONAL ANTHEM AT INDIANAPOLIS 500 May 19, 2023 | By Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Joins Must-Watch Pre-Race Show on NBC

Jewel, a multi-platinum singer-songwriter, actress, mental health lived experience expert and best-selling author, will perform the national anthem before the start of the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“The singing of the national anthem before the Indy 500 green flag is a signature and iconic moment at the Racing Capital of the World,” said IMS President J. Douglas Boles. “For over a century, we’ve gathered at IMS to salute our nation’s military heroes, and the national anthem performance is a tradition that reminds us all of their sacrifice and bravery. Jewel’s rendition will be a memorable and moving experience for fans at the track and watching from home on NBC.”

As a lived experience expert and pioneer in the mental health space, Jewel is passionate about democratizing wellness. She developed an emotional and mental health curriculum that has been proven to work by experts. For 21 years, her Inspiring Children Foundation and Jewel Inc. have been bringing these mental health programs to at-risk youth and to corporations. She recently joined the innovative mental health platform Innerworld as co-founder and chief strategy officer to make mental health support more accessible to all. Jewel also created SELLA, a language arts curriculum for schools that incorporates social and emotional learning and mental health practices.

Jewel went from a girl who grew up with no running water on an Alaskan homestead [The Kilcher family are relatives of the singer Jewel, with Atz being her father] to earning 26 music award nominations, becoming a multi-platinum recording artist who released one of the best-selling albums of all time.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a cause and conversation in which the INDYCAR paddock has been an active participant.

NBC’s live coverage of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge starts at 11 a.m. (ET) Sunday, May 28.

OH YEAH ! Those were some badass engines.

IMG-5467

The Offenhauser:

One of the keys to the Offenhauser engine's success and popularity was its power. A 251.92 cubic inch (4,128.29 cm³) DOHC naturally-aspirated four-cylinder racing Offy with a 15:1 compression ratio and a 4.28125-by-4.375-inch (108.744 mm × 111.125 mm) bore and stroke could produce 420 hp (310 kW) at 6,600 rpm (1.77 hp per cubic inch, 81 kW/L) making it remarkably power-dense. Other variants of the engine produced even higher outputs of 3 hp per cubic inch (137 kW/L), unparalleled for their size and capacity in power-to cubic-inch/cylinder-count ratio. Another reason for the engine's success was its reliability. Its monobloc construction made it immune to head gasket or cylinder stud problems, and allowed for higher cylinder pressures.

From 1934 through the 1970s, the Offenhauser engine dominated American open-wheel racing, winning the Indianapolis 500 27 times. From 1950 through 1960, Offenhauser-powered cars won the Indianapolis 500 and achieved all three podium positions, winning the pole position in 10 of the 11 years.

Offenhauser produced engine blocks in several sizes. These blocks could be bored out or sleeved to vary the cylinder bore, and could be used with crankshafts of various strokes, resulting in a wide variety of engine displacements. Offenhauser (and Meyer-Drake, in later years) frequently made blocks, pistons, rods, and crankshafts to specific customer requests. However, certain engine sizes were common, and could be considered the "standard" Offenhauser engines:

97 cu in (1.59 L) - to meet the displacement rule in many midget series
220 cu in (3.6 L) - displacement rule in AAA (later USAC) sprint cars
270 cu in (4.4 L) - displacement rule for the Indianapolis 500 under AAA rules
255 cu in (4.18 L) - for Indianapolis (during the 1930s fuel consumption rules)
252 cu in (4.13 L) - displacement rule for Indianapolis under USAC rules
168 cu in (2.75 L) - displacement rule for turbocharged engines at Indianapolis (to 1968)
159 cu in (2.61 L) - displacement rule for turbocharged engines at Indianapolis (1969 and later)

IIRC Mid-Ohio is Bobby’s Home Track.

That’s neat, should’ve camped out and watched the work on the cars😁

Graham got very lucky to get this ride. He drives for Honda and there were some Contractual hurdles that had to be handled because the Ride he was offered is a Chevrolet but they figured it out.

To Win first you have to be in it !

You know that he’s Married to Courtney Force (one of John Force’s daughters) and they have 2 children.

Yes, Mid-Ohio was Bobby’s home track, and we were close enough to see races there for a number of years. We also saw several at Watkins Glen and Road America. Great fun, but definitely for young people! Sooooo much walking!!!

I didn’t know Graham was married to Courtney. We pretty much lost touch with the sport for a number of years. This year we have been watching the races again.

I can only imagine what their kids are going to do when they find out what Grandpa John does for a living and they see all the videos of him blowing up the Funny Cars over the years.

Our town is Danville, once home of the .Mayberry in the Midwest Festival. CoVid killed it for 2 years and then when it was time to start it again, the town council nixed it. They’ve all been voted out now, so there’s hope to have another one next year.

I th8nk of .Danville as a suburb of Avon, and Avon as a suburb of Indy. We are equidistant to Avon, Brownsburg, and Plainfield, though, and could be considered a suburb of any of these.

That’s crazy! Hubby said he wants to just watch it tonight. He tried to get around the blackout, but it wouldn’t let him. So I probably won’t check this thread until later in the day, after we’ve seen it.

A bad pit stop cost the #14 some time and a fine.

Luckily that tire just got over the grandstand. If the tire went into the grandstand several people would’ve died. That was the most dangerous part of that accident and the NBC crew barely touched on it.
