Astronomy Picture of the Day - The Sun and Its Missing Colors

Explanation: Here are all the visible colors of the Sun, produced by passing the Sun's light through a prism-like device. The spectrum was created at the McMath-Pierce Solar Observatory and shows, first off, that although our white-appearing Sun emits light of nearly every color, it appears brightest in yellow-green light. The dark patches in the featured spectrum arise from gas at or above the Sun's surface absorbing sunlight emitted below. Since different types of gas absorb different colors of light, it is possible to determine what gasses compose the Sun. Helium, for example, was first discovered in 1868 on a solar spectrum and only later found here on Earth. Today, the majority of spectral absorption lines have been identified - but not all.

Yellows and greens are the frequencies of light that the human eye sees most readily.

There is a scientific prism like device in the atmosphere right after or during a rain, gives the same result, in a large arc, mimicking the big one 93 mil miles away.:-))

That is really neat. I’m starting to get more interested in observing and photographing the Sun. My telescope isn’t getting as much sky-time as I would like at night , so the Sun is becoming more of an object of interest for me.

To match the peak wavelength of light that the sun produces, which is somewhere in the yellow-green:

As given by the blackbody radiation curve of the sun based on its temperature. And also what the atmosphere doesn't absorb.

Today, the majority of spectral absorption lines have been identified - but not all.

"The vapour did not diffuse as a true gas would do. It hung together in banks, flowing sluggishly down the slope of the land and driving reluctantly before the wind, and very slowly it combined with the mist and moisture of the air, and sank to the earth in the form of dust. Save that an unknown element giving a group of four lines in the blue of the spectrum is concerned, we are still entirely ignorant of the nature of this substance." ~ H. G. Wells

The sun was more yellow when I was a kid.

That's what I remember. I wonder if it was, or if that was an artifact of air pollution before it became a major concern and subject to heavy regulation.

Fascinating topic in its own right, but ya think this has anything to do with “Pride Month”? Nah…

Previously it was ROY G BIV β€” Now it’s a different sequence of letters +
