U.S. lands unmanned Odysseus spacecraft on moon

An unmanned, robotic lunar lander launched by a private U.S. company landed on the moon Thursday evening.

“We can confirm, without a doubt, that our equipment is on the surface of the moon,” said Stephen Altemus, CEO of Intuitive Machines, the Houston-based company that operated the Odysseus spacecraft. “Welcome to the moon.”

As it approached the surface of the moon, Odysseus lost contact with NASA, resulting in several anxious minutes for those who worked on the joint project. But after approximately 15 minutes of searching, officials confirmed that they were once again receiving signals from the spacecraft.

“A commercial lander named Odysseus, powered by a company called Intuitive Machines, launched up on a Space X rocket, carrying a bounty of NASA scientific instruments and bearing the dream of a new adventure, a new adventure in science, innovation and American leadership, well, all of that aced the landing of a lifetime,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said after contact had been reestablished. “Today for the first time in more than a half century, the U.S. has returned to the moon.”

Altemus had estimated that Odysseus had an 80% chance of successfully landing on the moon, citing previous failed attempts as an advantage. “We’ve stood on the shoulders of everybody who’s tried before us,” Altemus said.

It was the first American mission to land on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972 and the first private spacecraft ever to make a soft landing there.

While it was a private mission, NASA paid Intuitive Machines $118 million to deliver six instruments to the moon. And the U.S. space agency provided streaming video of the landing.

Nice try.

Answer the question. Who are all the scientists who doubt the moon landings? University types. Name them. Point to their published works or opinions.

You moon hoaxers have a screw loose. It’s so goddamned absurd I don’t even know where to begin. There are lunar orbiter satellite photographs of all the landing sites that clearly show the descent stages, ALSEP gear, rovers, footprints.

Are those fake too? LOL

Stanley Kubrick was not a scientist.

Don’t point me to a crackpot webpage. You have to provide some sort of evidence, peer reviewed studies, from credible scientists. I am not aware of any such individuals.

There is no fucking way they could have faked the photographic imagery and film. Are you daft? YouTube has virtually all the 16 mm film they took on the surface. It is a privilege to watch these brave men.

You really ought to be ashamed.

In two years they hope to do another (crewed) flyby, first done in 1968

Set back 10 years now. More if FAA, EPA, local lawsuits continue to harass and set back StarShip launches from Boca Chica even more years.

The Artemis program is the most expensive and complicated way to get 2 people to **orbit** the Moon ever devised, even factoring in inflation.

what rationale did the Soviets have for not pointing out it was fake?

Because it was not a fake - tinfoil goes on sale at grocery stores nationwide tomorrow. Hurry down before supplies are gone!

NASA is superfluous, IMO. Cut their budget 90% and give it to real American innovators and entrepreneurs.

Nice idea but the FAA, EPA, Fish & Wildlife, local enviro groups would shut them down in a heart beat, as they are trying to do with SpaceX’s Starship.

Well, we can tell you are over the age of 9, but could it be that was when you stopped learning?

Project Orion (not to be confused with a recent NASA endeavor) had the motto, “Mars by 1965, Saturn by 1970. Begun in 1958. Killed in 1964 to make way for the far, far less ambitions Apollo program.

Small system exploratory ships would have had crews 150, Interstellar versions crew would have been in thousands.

Design and concept for nuclear explosion propelled vehicle. Concept, design and model built. System worked. Larger the better. Small 10,000 ton vehicle with crew of 150 planed, 40 million ton (= 265 supersized oil ships) interstellar vehicle next

The bigger the ship, the better it worked, using small nukes exploding against a pusher plate. Assembled in orbit or launched on conventional rockets to space.

Used water for shielding, so crews could shower every day.

Holy crap! I see you served in the military as far back as 1966. That means you were minted back in ‘48 or earlier, so by now presumably in your dotage. So I’ll overlook your ignorant insults, even though they go against the posting policies at FR.

You get to pick and choose which sources you trust.

Understand though that anybody on the government and corporate payroll has a conflict of interest.

Watch the press conference of the “brave men” after they got home after Apollo 11.

They look like prisoners of war.

Yes, a press conference is prima facie evidence the entire US space program was faked. I mean, that just stands to reason.

Say, what do you think of all the subsequent lunar images, landers, satellites. Are those fake too?
