The Orthodox rabbi at Columbia University and Barnard College sent a message recommending Jewish students leave campus and go home, as anti-Israel agitators have continued an "encampment" on campus and participants were caught on camera espousing full-on support for terrorism and supporting violence towards Jewish students.
In a WhatsApp message sent to hundreds before the start of Passover, Rabbi Elie Buechler, director of OU-LJIC at Columbia/Barnard, told students to leave "as soon as possible" until the situation improves, noting that "what we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic."
"The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy," Buechler wrote. "It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved."
The rabbi added: "It is not our job as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus. No one should have to endure this level of hatred, let alone at school."
House GOP Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., on Sunday demanded Columbia University President Dr. Nemat "Minouche" Shafik to "immediately resign" given how Columbia’s leadership "has clearly lost control of its campus" within the last 24 hours, "putting Jewish students’ safety at risk."
Stefanik asserted that Columbia leadership’s hours of preparation for their testimony before the House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing last week "clearly was an attempt to cover up for their abject failure to enforce their own campus rules and protect Jewish students on campus."

Beginning soon after October 7th there have been stories of Jewish students in universities putting Jewish Star of David necklaces and other signs of being Jewish into desk drawers at dorms. Not since decades ago has this happened.
Other students deliberately started wearing such items to show they will not back down.

Antisemitism at Michigan Colleges Has Reached Frightening Levels
In the past six months, violent antisemitic attacks have grown more common in higher education.
Jewish students at Columbia were attacked by individuals “wielding sticks” outside of their library; students at UC Berkeley were berated for attending an on-campus speaker event; and at Tulane, a student’s nose was broken while he was trying to stop protesters from burning an Israeli flag. Universities across the United States have found themselves in a serious predicament, and if they don’t figure out how to stop this blatant Jew hatred on campus, they will soon find their Jewish student populations dwindling.
As anti-Israel messages are increasingly shared by my peers and strewn throughout campus, students’ hate for Israel increases. With it, feelings of safety on campus diminish.”
Andrew Klein, another freshman at Michigan State University, has similar feelings about the culture on campus. He states that “after October 7, campus culture has taken a turn for the worse. It has been disheartening to see students who, a few months ago, could not locate Israel on the map become foreign policy experts, putting anti-Zionist legislation through our student government.”
I respect the rabbi’s concern for human safety but
running away from evil threats is, imho, not a winning strategy.
it is usually (perhaps not always) better to defeat your enemy, not just run away
there are certainly things these students could do and carry to lessen the likelihood of getting hurt on or off campus
A Jewish student should be armed, trained and alert!
You are in danger for wearing clothing that shows you are Jewish or a supporter of Israel at Columbia.
You are not in danger for wearing clothing that identifies you as Arab or a supporter of Gaza’s war against Israel.
It’s past time to get some hard hats together and go to town.

Actually it is your job, Rabbi. The cops exist to write reports and draw chalk outlines around the bodies. Depending on them for your personal safety is stupid.

I would gather together a group-—HIRE a BULLDOG LAWYER-—and SUE COLUMBIA for every penny spent on my education/ housing/ books, etc while there.
MAKE IT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT if NECESSARY.

That is certainly a good solution for many students, and they should be proudly encouraged. Others might find other options better for the particular studies they wish to pursue.
Certainly there has been NO loud and consistent condemnation from American education and government leaders on the anti-Semitic racism overtaking Columbia and other US campuses. Has the Biden administration condemned the threats by pro-Hamas students against Jews on campus?
This is no longer the 1930’s where the only game in town is North America and Europe. There are high quality international level Universities outside the West where students can do their studies or work on their doctorates. There are the Indian Institute of Tecnologies (IITs) in India, the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, some in China and elsewhere that are top tier.
The longer term point is that Jewish scholarship in the West has lead to 129 Nobel Prizes, plus technological leadership in many fields. Ill treatment by Western countries does not have to be tolerated. Sending excellent Jewish scholars to the developing world can accelerate the shift in technological power to nations and peoples who might be more appreciative. And maybe the trickle can turn into something larger where these countries will be safer places for communities that should avoid a West that is about to self destruct.
They see such Jews as supporting a state that is engaging in ethnic cleansing.
Of course, any illegal and indiscriminate actions here are wrong, but that is their perspective.
The match has been lit this will be the slow death of liberal Universities in the US. The left runs toward the cliff in a hoard and cannot stop.
