Social media users have reacted to a viral video in which Police Minister Bheki Cele says that people with tattoos have “gangster tendencies”.
According to News24, Cele was speaking to the media and residents of Orlando East in Soweto, Gauteng, following the weekend fatal mass shooting at a local tavern.
He assured the residents that police visibility in the area would be increased.
Cele said that approximately 10 000 newly recruited police officers were in training until December 15. Following their training, they would also help to secure communities.
In the same breath, Cele slammed tattoos, saying that his department will not hire people with tattoos because they “have gangster tendencies”.
“When you have a tattoo, we don’t hire you because you have a tendency of being a gangster,” said Cele.
Twitter users reacted to Cele’s remarks, with many not taking them kindly.
Take a look at some of the Twitter reactions below:
I remember when only Navy men had tattoos. And Popeye, the Sailor Man.
It’s really distressing to see how many women are getting tattooed these days.
Good job sir.
I would agree it’s an accurate remark. People with tattoos probably are more likely to be a gangster than people without tats are. Is it not true? That doesn’t mean EVERYONE with a tat is a gangster, but i bet it’s more likely. Why is the truth so scary to everyone today? nobody can say anything anymore, and truth is the first victim.
There is a certain kind of rebel attitude associated with getting inked.
Your not kidding..went to a waterpark the other day...tats on alost all of them, and almost all of the are sea cows...so glad my “young girl chasing” days are over...slim pickens these days...
Well actually it seems like NOT having a tat is rebellious!
Meh, what kind of rebel are you if everybody else has a tattoo. To rebel today is to not get a tattoo.
Tattoo - The Who
Me and my brother were talking to each other
‘Bout what makes a man a man
Was it brain or brawn, or the month you were born
We just couldn’t understand
Our old man didn’t like our appearance
He said that only women wear long hair
So me and my brother borrowed money from Mother
We knew what we had to do
We went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium
And got our arms tattooed
Welcome to my life, tattoo
I’m a man now, thanks to you
I expect I’ll regret you
But the skin graft man won’t get you
You’l be there when I die
Tattoo
My dad beat me ‘cause mine said “Mother”
But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother
‘Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
And my mother thought that was extremely rude
Welcome to my life, tattoo
We’ve a long time together, me and you
I expect I’ll regret you
But the skin graft man won’t get you
You’ll be there when I die
Tattoo
Now I’m older, I’m tattooed all over
My wife is tattooed too
A rooty-toot-toot, rooty-tooty-toot-toot
Rooty-toot-toot tattoo too
To you
FFS!
I have no tatoos or piercings... i think they are hideous and limit your earning potential, but having said that, the notion that they display violent tendencies is a notion from the era of Ozzie and Harriet.
It’s gross. See it every day.
“To rebel today is to not get a tattoo.”
Absolutely...I know several people who think the same...too late for me though.
Oh well.
Dunno about SA, but here in US, damn near everybody of a younger age has ‘em. Because everybody has ‘em, you can’t infer a thing about the average tattoo bearer.
Oh yes I can.
Some tattoos can be interesting, but people are making their bodies into doodle pads.
I call it “body graffiti”
Not attractive at all.
“so glad my “young girl chasing” days are over...slim pickens these days...
“
Actually ugly, chip on-their-shoulder, foul-mouthed, FAT pickings.
Some are truly awful - look like someone drew on them with a ball point pen.
