Rep. Raskin: Must Decriminalize Pot at Federal Level as ‘Matter of Basic Justice’ in U.S.

At a Nov. 15 hearing on cannabis reform at the federal level, House Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said President Joe Biden’s pardon of people convicted of “simple possession” of marijuana under federal law was “a good first step,” and added that the next step is that “cannabis must be decriminalized at the federal level as a matter of basic justice in the country.”

Under current federal law, marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 illegal drug, which means it has a “high potential for abuse” and is not a “currently accepted medical treatment in the U.S.,” according to Drugs.com. Other Schedule 1 drugs include Heroin, LSD, MDMA, and psilocybic mushrooms.

In his remarks before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Nov. 15, Raskin drew a parallel between the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s and the federal prohibition against marijuana, saying that both actions produced social chaos, crime, and violence. “The war against marijuana has ruined so many lives,” said Raskin. […]

Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow with the Heritage Foundation, has warned about the dangers of comparing alcohol with marijuana. In a commentary he wrote, “Unlike marijuana, alcohol is also not a gateway drug. One of the greatest harms of marijuana legalization is increased addiction to and use of harder drugs. Prosecutors, judges, police officers and others involved in the criminal justice system know that the vast majority of defendants arrested for violent crimes test positive for illegal drugs, including marijuana. And they know marijuana is the starter drug for most criminals.” …

If you have a law on the books that both parties are not enforcing, then it should be repealed.

I think it would be good for the Dems to push for repealing the federal pot laws. Distract them from passing Dreamer path to citizenship.

Many morning glory species have LSA in their seeds (lysergic acid amide), a precursor to LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide). For that and because of being classified as noxious weeds, possession of such plants and their seeds is quite heavily regulated.

Same goes for the peyote cactus, which produces mescaline.

BTW, drinking alcohol is not produced industrially, but from plants itself. I have never seen people who abuse alcohol go to heavy downers as I’ve seen those who abuse cannabis, although they might tend towards stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines.

Which of the 18 original enumerated powers governs the federal government’s ability to force states to legalize drugs?

I don’t agree with government regulating natural plants that have psychedelic properties. These plants have been used for thousands of years and it’s just the recent failed war on drugs that has demonized these plants. Again, I’m for leaving people alone. An idea that I thought would have support from most Freepers.

36 cases a day of marijuana psychosis on average at San Diego emergency room. Walking dead all over the country with their signs begging for money on every street corner while jobs go unfilled. This commie asshole is pushing the great reset. If they ever are in total control they will shoot everyone that is high because “they are keeping 50 year plan from meeting the people’s goal.”.

As of 1/1/23 I, an old guy with arthritis, can possess up to eight ounces of pot here in Kentucky. I have to drive to Michigan to buy it but assuming I don’t get popped transporting it across Ohio, I’m gold to smoke my brains out. I think dope and gambling are the US’s bread and circuses.

It’s either your thing or it’s not

I tried it a few times. It’s no big deal. It reminds me of a party trick. A parlor game.

After the very very very minor affect wore off in about two hours I laughed. I said, you gotta be kidding me?! That’s it?!

The whole schedule one and the illegalality of it all is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

It’s one thing to leave moral people alone, and yet another to leave evil people alone to do evil. I however do not say, or attempt to say, that the federal or state governments have any power to violate the Bill of Rights.

Amazing. I actually agree with Raskin. Not because marijuana is necessarily some wonder drug, but because the Constitution gives the feds no jurisdiction to ban pot for Americans. Let the states ban it or regulate it.

“So pot smoking is fine for your Lungs but tobacco is Evil ?”

From what I’ve been reading, fentanyl is showing up now on pot.

This is insanity.

Supposedly modern marijuana is much stronger than what most people remember from their youth and much more dangerous. Laura Ingraham has been warning about how dangerous it is, but the GOP has lost this argument with the masses

They currently hold both houses of Congress, plus the White House. Why don’t they do it?

I said I don’t care if its legal since I don’t do it and frankly it never stopped people from doing it in the first place. It just makes the general public easier to control so the current push for its decriminalization makes sense.

I’ve been hearing about this “super, more potent” marijuana when I was in high school in the early 90s. Smoked some pretty strong stuff with friends two months ago - didn’t turn me into a degenerate addict either (prefer cigars - weed just makes me more depressed than I already am).

To all drug warriors - find another bill to die on please. Weed ain’t fentanyl.
