Group Demands Failing Students Be Allowed to Gradu

Californians for Justice filed a writ in April demanding that the state drop its requirement that students must pass the math and English test in order to receive a diploma. "Students who put in their time should graduate," said Tonto Moro, one of the students who failed the test. "They don't require prisoners who serve their time to pass a test in order to get out of jail. It is unfair to us who have committed no crime to be treated worse."

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman previously granted this year's senior class a reprieve from passing the exit exam to earn a diploma. In his decision, Freedman agreed with five students from Richmond High School who claimed that the test was unfair to English learners and economically disadvantaged students who were more likely to have unqualified teachers and insufficient supplies to learn material on the test.

"We are a multicultural society," said Freedman in his ruling. "Requiring everyone to learn English is Yankee imperialism at its worst. Until such a time as every student is provided with full time translation assistance the schools will be barred from requiring these tests be passed by Latino students."

Che Perezoso, spokesman for Californians for Justice, called the ruling a "good start." "This ruling is a good start," said Perezoso. "However, it doesn't finish the job. Now that these students are out of high school the government needs to provide housing, food and clothing. A society that has failed to teach them English must look after their welfare."

They're failures. The Government desperately needs them.

Put in their time? Education is not about putting in time, but rather, having learned something. And the only viable way to determine whether anyone has learned anything is to test.

Obviously, Mr. Moro hasn't learn anything in school.

Judge Robert Freedman was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Pete Wilson in 1998 and elected assistant presiding judge in 2003.

"They don't require prisoners who serve their time to pass a test in order to get out of jail.

We pass mandatory education laws requiring our children to be herded around by the state for 12/13 years of their life and we're surprised by statements like this? I have never been able to figure out why we will not give the government the power to provide us with food, clothing and shelter....the essentials of life. But we gladly hand over our progeny to those folks willingly, expecting better performance than what we receive from the D.M.V., the V.A. or the Postal service.

Can you imagine having a "Department of Food" rather than our up to date modern "Super Duper Grocery" retailers. Can you imagine buying your new home from "The Department of Housing and Construction".

It has been my experience that the only thing "Government" can do better than free enterprise is make war. Sometimes I have my doubts about that also. I cannot understand why there is not a major movement in this country to do away with state sponsored indoctrination. I do not accept the silly notion of children being left behind without public funding.

The Leftists are working on those as well. Check out all the ninnies who want to regulate not just food, but how much we eat, what we eat, when we eat, how many times you can flush a toilet. These people are evil!
