We got a nice surprise as we started to filter outside to enjoy the balmy evening after a very moving fund raiser dinner for our imprisoned Border Agents Ramos and Compean and Sheriff Gilmer Hernandez when Robert Duvall stopped by to show HIS support for their plight and for securing our southern border.
Mr Duvall was quite gracious in spending his time among the Ramos, Compean and Hernandez supporters as his admirers crowded around him for photos.
It was a nice way to end a very good evening with speeches from Congressman Duncan Hunter, Senator Dana Rohrabacher, Senator Ted Poe and Senator Brian Bilbray - all emphatically in support of our imprisoned Border Agents and Sheriff Hernandez. A collection was taken that garnered around $1600 just from the people attending the event and a check for around $6000 was presented by FAIR president Dan Stein to the wives of the two Border Agents, Monica Ramos and Patty Compean.
Monica Ramos read a very emotional and moving letter to her from Ignacio telling her to be strong. Many sniffles could be heard around the room and somehow Monica showed her strength in being able to read it in front of a room full of supporters without letting her tears stop her. I will have you know that I saw Dana Rohrabacher visibly moved by her letter... you won't see that from very many politicians I can tell you that. Dana Rohrabacher is a stand-up guy as are many of the politicians who have spoken out against this administration for what they have done to our Border Agents and other law enforcement officers who are involved with securing our borders.
This just in... Congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) has agreed to co-sponsor HR 563 as a result of the efforts of Rita Bonilla as spokesperson of You Don't Speak for Me and the family of Ignacio Ramos. Yesterday it seemed to no avail when they spoke to his staff but today it seems, their appeals have convinced him to change his position and he has agreed to support this resolution. Congressman Nunes is the FIRST Hispanic House member to support HR 563 to pardon Border Agents Ramos and Compean which we find surprising since Ramos and Compean are Hispanic as well as political prisoners of our Justice Department.
Congressman Nunes plans to make this announcement tonight at the fundraiser for Ramos and Compean being held at the Hold The Feet to The Fire event in Washington, DC at the Phoenix Park Hotel.

Hold their feet to the fire ping!
Dats da' man!
Hunter ping.
That’s great. I hope it helps to raise the spirits of “our guys”.
What a stand up guy!
He is such a great actor!
Ping!
For anyone wondering, the deadline for filing of the briefs for the Appeal is May 2, 2007 (original deadline was April 3).
There may be more in the news, soon.
Thanks, AuntB. Even at my age, Robert Duvall makes my heart beat a little faster! Wouldn’t it be great if he would endorse Rep. Hunter?
Will Judge Cardone have input into that?
Political prisoners? They were charged, indicted, tried, and found guilty by a jury of their peers.
If you think the facts of the case were not appropriately presented to the jury, or the jury failed to properly take them into account, by all means have congressional hearings to review the evidence.
But this "congressional pardon" stuff just makes us look silly. There are separation of powers issues, constitutional issues. If the founding fathers had wanted the legislative body to be an arbiter of the guilt or innocence of individual criminals, they would have given them that power.
but the constitution explicitly gives that power to the judicial system as judge of who has violated the common laws, and of the executive in deciding who to charge for crimes, and for pardoning those who are deemed to have been unfairly treated.
When conservatives abuse the system like this, it makes our arguments for strict constitutional fealty look politically motivated.
Yes, it would!
Good for him!!!! I guess not living in SoCal with the hollywood elite actually gives him a sense of country.
I would have thought with Robert Duvall at the event, they would have raised more than $1600 dollars. He’s got a bit of money himself.
In my area (where he lives) he’s part of an organization protesting Dominion Power for wanting to run a new Power Line through the county Duvall lives.
But in general he’s a good conservative.
bump
No. Cardone was the district court judge in the last trial. Now it’s before the Appeals Court and will be subject to a 3 judge panel. (I don’t know which judges—I’m not sure how that works).
Clearly, the congress cannot pardon them themselves.
I'd like to read the wording of the HR...I bet it does not try to pardon them itself, but probably urges the President to do so.
Robert Duvall ~ using his celebrity the right way.
Where was this gathering?
Duval has always been a 1st class actor, and a get Tango dancer!
