“How did you test? Eat it?”

yep

Didn’t use stored water but we have a berkley filter so I don’t expect water to be a serious issue. Also planning on a 3 stage pre-filter to help.

Plan 3 gallons of water per day per person.

The Mormons have outstanding information on stockpiling food and supplies. Some of the highlights...stockpile the food you regularly eat. You are not going to develop a sudden taste for freeze dried chicken a la king. Once a year, inventory for expiry dates and cycle that into your household food stream. Replace your inventory with fresh stock. Work out the exact ingredients for your favorite recipes and acquire accordingly, so that you only buy what you need. Don't forget spices, herbs and flavors as these will be hard to get and can dress up things you'd otherwise not want to eat. (I'm just sayin..) Mayor Bloomberg notwithstanding, you can't stockpile too much salt. You need it to live, to taste, and to preserve food. It will also make an excellent barter item.

On another note, that you probably won't hear from them, stockpile liquor. It's good for medicine, disinfectant, oblivion, and barter. Senator's Club, Orloff's, and Ron Baroca will do just fine. No one's going to care about quality and a fifth will get you a rifle and a half dozen boxes of ammo.

We’re going the bulk route but wanted 3 months of the canned food on hand.

The way we’re looking at it, the canned stuff is there for several reasons:

1. Supplement and flavor the bulk grains, beans, pasta.
2. Trade goods - individual cans are good trade ‘units’.
3. Provide variety (ties into item #1) and the occasional treat.

Doesn’t pay to open a #10 can of baked beans when there are only two or three of you. We know.

“Doesn’t pay to open a #10 can of baked beans when there are only two or three of you. “

Thats one of my concerns, even with the bulk freeze dried foods.

Just spoke with a fellow today and he was all tough saying he can pick em off from the front porch.

Told it would be easier to not be someone’s crumb trail for beggars or theives.

once they know you are supplied, you will become very interesting to others and just not worth the hassle.

Better to be covert and appear to be a beggar class than a victim.

Personally, I recommend you have a Berkey or Lifesaver unit.

My Lifesaver can purify 6,000 liters of water. Enough for four people and a year. I have an extra filter, so that should make it definitely a year if something goes wrong.

16 extra prefilters and 16 additional carbon filters.

Still I would like to have an additional system for my other backpack and will purchase one soon, with an extra filter.

That would be 4 years water but, even so, LifeSaver now has a Jerry can version and that will purify 20,000 liters. With extra filters that can take me to 60,000 liters.

just $300 bucks and it won’t seem all that expensive if am sitting somewhere wondering where I am going to get clean water.

In fact, I will be thanking my lucky stars for being so forward thinking.

I noticed it has a deck of cards. This is very good, because I heard that if you ever get lost, you can start playing Solitaire, and sure enough, someone will show up to tell you the red six goes on the black seven.....

I would guess most people who say they have food to last X number of months/years...probably only have 1/4 of that...if that.

I think I could go days on end...eating one meal a day. But it's still more than a couple cans a beans.

Let's say two can's a beans, and two cans of spam...a day. Yeah, I know...not a great meal. HA!

Anyway...a person could "survive" on that for a year..but that's 730 some cans of beans..and 365 cans of spam.

That's a lot of cans!!

Wish I had a better answer..........

Just so. You really don’t want to be in that ‘pick ‘em off fromt he front porch’ situation. It’s a fantasy and you’ll probably get killed in the bargain.

We make a point of buying stuff in bulk some distance from where we live and we never give out phone numbers or addresses for ‘discount cards’ and the like.

We let our Costco cards lape a while back. Plenty of other places to do that kind of business. Oriental markets are good if you can find the right ones. Farmers markets, too. We live close enough to Montana to hit the Wheat Montana place for a big bulk buy. Cash only, of course.

“I think I could go days on end...eating one meal a day. But it’s still more than a couple cans a beans.”

Have you tried? While doing any kind of hard work?

Most men need at least 2000 calories a day. If you’re doing hard work it goes up to 3000 calories easy. A 28oz can of Bush’s baked beans has 840 calories. Beans that you puke up because you’re sick of em don’t count.

I wish you had a better answer too.

Interesting point you made. Places like Costco can track what you’ve purchased It will likely become important once they start arresting hoarders.

What we have done is to stock up on dry foods, beans, rice, spices, etc. Also, everytime we go to the store, the rule is to bring back one thing to add to the stores. Recently, we found a very inexpensive instant pizza dough that only requires water to mix. You could use it like flat bread, or fry it or put it on a skewer and cook it over an open fire.

Additionally, dried instant pasta dishes are cheap. Look for stuff that only requires water.

Our biggest problems are how to long term store cooking oil and water.

Anyone have any suggestions, especially on the cooking oil?

You may want to visit the Survivalblog page.

THey some very good reasons not to be anywhere near a ‘city’ if it should hit the fan.

The term ‘Golden Horde’ is used.

I use ‘gust front’ to describe the leading edge of refugees..
