OSCILLOCOCCINUM: Yay or Nay?
Trader Joes ^ | 12/13/14

Posted on 12/13/2014 10:33:00 PM PST by BunnySlippers

I have had what seems like the flu or 2 or 3 weeks. It is a killer sore throat, moderate cough. But it is the sore throat that is killing me.

Anyway, I just dragged myself out to Trader Joe's to buy something tempting and thought I would check out their tiny medicine section.

I saw and bought Oscillococcinum which was hiding on the bottoms half. I know nothing about it except what I just learned in Wikipedia.

Does anyone have experience with this stuff.

Actually, if I start to get a throat, I start immediately to gargle thoroughly with warm salt water, maybe 1/2 tsp in 4 oz water, and use it all. It is the most helpful and least damaging to your innards, and almost every internist recommends it. If tomato soup doesn't cause the gemeral condition feel like it's getting better (and it ought to), I tell my MD to prescribe one Zithromax pack. We have found it works for me, and quickly.

Some people ought not to take it though:

Hmm ... Gargling. Yes, that is great advise. I’ll do that tonight before going to bed.

Actual flu, however is a different beast. I have only had flu once in my life at that was when I was 16.

I had a bad case of the flu back in the 80's, which kept me down for two weeks. I would feel better during the day, but be down in the dumps each morning.

Just two weeks ago, I came down with what must have been flu for the first time since then, although it wasn't quite as bad. It did come on very suddenly, and in fact it was a single moment when I sneezed, ( not unusual for me, ) but I knew at that moment that I was sick. I was spiking a fever up to 102+, but Advil helped. For three days, I slept and was awake, for a few hours at a time, without regard to the time of day. I recovered very well, but as is typical of the flu, it seemed to linger. I thought I was over it but I would be sleepy all day, and like that.

I haven't ever had a flu shot, but I did let the doctor talk me into a pneumonia vaccine just recently, ( since I'm old, you know, ) so I blame that ... 1/2 :-)

Keep your windows closed.

The thing that causes this illness is named "Enza."

I had a good friend who did not heed this advice.

She slept with her bedroom window open and sure enough, in flew Enza.

If you insist on Oscillococcinum or Sambucus it could be more expeditious to simply oscillate Sambuca.

(Seriously - Sambuca and coffee = miracle drug. If you find Sambuca too sweet, try Arak.)

Indeed, it most certainly is.

I am always amazed by the amount of credibility people give to quack medicine. They won’t touch something that’s been tested on thousands of patients, about which everything is known about how it will affect the body, but when some snake oil salesman mixes up who knows what in his basement and tells them it’s a miracle cure, they line up to buy it.

A psycho allergy would be where they believe they have allergies against anything and everything, without having symptoms or being tested.

Unless you have been confirmed to have a bacterial infection, and the bacterial species is identified, it is not a good idea to take antibiotic. Antibiotic resistant bacteria are becoming a huge problem because of overuse of antibiotics.

Most sore throats will clear up on their own. If you have sore throat and fever, it could be bacterial (but it isn’t always).

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome defies allergy testing and produces allergic symptoms and more.

The trigger isn’t necessarily an allergen so it can appear that someone is allergic to anything and everything.

And they’re often labeled as hypochondriacs until they get a diagnosis.

Or it’s more deadly cousin, Quincy. It requires massive doses of anti-biotic and can kill if not treated. Ask George Washington.

When you’re done with the antibiotics for your strep...

...be absolutely sure to follow a probiotic regime.

Or you’ll just get sick and feel like crap all over again. The rest of the ‘remedies’ won’t do anything bit drain your bank if your system isn’t restored first.

They do use it in Germany. The thing with MOST homeopathic medicines is that you need to use them (usually) at first symptoms. However, you might find some relief, and if so, then go for it. I take Beta Carotene as a anti-viral which works well as a pain management treatment for Porphyria, which I have, and I get few colds and flu. I cannot take the flu shot so I take my Beta Carotene. I use the 25K strength.

It is also a great preventative for warts. In fact, if you already have warts, you can take 4 of these daily for 2 months, then go back to taking regular strength and the warts will not return. I frequently had warts all over my left hand. When I got them on my feet so badly, as well, a friend told me about Beta Carotene. I SWEAR by it! It still works for a preventative for colds and flu.

Drink a lot of green tea. That helps to reduce cold and flu symptoms and the fluids help keep you hydrated when taking medicine.

I don’t know about that medicine. I do know what I always use for a sore throat—a very warm, strong, salt water gargle.

I gargle every hour or so, if it is a very painful sore throat.

If salt water doesn’t clear up my throat in a day or two, I need a check from the doctor.

Salt water gargles are nasty but they work incredibly well!

Are you sure it's not Strep? Might consider getting it swabbed before it turns into something really bad.

I usually "self medicate" because most maladies just need to be waited out until the body conquers it. If something hangs on and it's obvious my body isn't winning the battle, I drag my reluctant fanny to get a medical check so I don't end up letting some bacterial infection gather enough force to vanquish me.

You were tested for strep throat? Always check for that when you have a severe sore throat, because an undetected strep throat can lead to scarlet fever damaging your heart.
