New Candidate for President Vows to Complete Metric Conversion [semi-satire]

This week, former Rhode Island Senator and Governor Lincoln Chafee announced he is seeking the Democratic nomination for president in the 2016 election. A key factor in his decision to enter the race is “to bring the much-needed conversion of weights and measurements in this country into line with the metric system.”

“The United States is seriously out of step with the rest of the world,” Chafee contended. “When everyone else is using meters and liters it is sheer arrogance for us to be using yards and gallons. It’s like we saying ‘we’re too good to lower ourselves to your level’ to the rest of the world. It’s a ‘stick in their eye’ that breeds hostility and feeds the fires of terrorism.”

Chafee conceded that “it will seem odd to hear announcers call football games with the coin toss at the 45.72 meter line and the kick-off from the 27.432 meter line. But wouldn’t this better than having terrorists fly airplanes into our skyscrapers?”

The candidate emphasized that “I am the only one talking about this issue. Voters who want a uniform global system of measurements will have a clear choice. Do they want to cleave to an archaic and eccentric system? Or do they want to boldly conform to what every other nation is doing? Progress or peril—that’s the choice I offer.”

Jimmy Carter attempted to turn the US into “Metric” in about 1977, by replacing all the miles signs with kilometers, reporting temperatures in Celsius, selling fuel in liters, and generally trying a “ram-down”.

Jimmy was not that popular, and it was soundly rejected back then. But now all the whiskey is sold by metric measure, instead of “fifths” or “magnums”. 750 Milliliters is LESS than the “fifth” it replaced.

Look at the labeling on most of the food you buy. It is listed first in metric, then in ounces.

It’s how the rest of the world repays us for defeating the Japanese and Germans — You’re welcome, now leave us the “F” alone.

Only 0bama would be able to force this country into SI (The name for the “metric” system.) He would get away with it without criticism. I wish he would do it.

So what? WHY should we follow along to conform to the rest of the world? A British gallon is not the same as an American gallon! A British measuriung cup is not the same as an American measuring cup.The Brits don’t drive on the right side of the road like the MAJORITY of countries do world wide, yet their naval directions force them to reverse their thinking and adhere to the “Red, Right, Return” law of the sea.
I, for one, have no interest in doing what the so called “rest of the world” does. America was once unique and people followed the American Way in many things.
CONFORMITY is another word for COMMUNISM. This political joker is just another conformity pushing idiot leftie. Conformity is also another word for laziness. It is easy to learn their way and just as easy to learn our way of measurements. Just expand the lazy mind and learn the differences.
Nobody is insisting(YET) that the entire world should speak the same language and all others should be relegated to the trash heap. When I am in Europe I accept the metric and Celsius systems, but when I come home I appreciate MILES,POUNDS, YARDS, and Fahrenheit.
To each his own and I think it is what is called “diversity.” Funny how diversity is so desirable to some, but only depending on the subject.

I know this is satire, but only Democrats have the bland stupidity to blithely assume that changing to the metric system is simply a matter of legislation.

Whenever someone comes up with this suggestion, I never hear them mention the cost of all the changes in tooling. It's hard to find 13mm steel plate rolling mills in this country. How many machines are calibrated in inches? Every manufacturing line in the country would have to be replaced. I wonder why that little fact always seems to slip through the cracks?

Their reply would be “think of all the jobs we will create by trashing all the existing tooling and replacing it.” I would assume all the jobs would go away and never come back.
