Why was an earlier version of this thread pulled?

. . . . . . . . . . .

The reason is shown in the link given at the bottom of this comment...

Good point. On the other hand, making a big deal about really not being able to break it unless Apple helps them might make the real bad dudes think their phones really are super secure and use them more? Ha, I don’t know that’s pretty convoluted.

Thanks, Deks, but the only way I can find a post is to see the link in the My Comments (or Pings) tab. However, when the thread is pulled, my comments in the My Comments tab also disappear, preventing me from revisiting the old web page without wading through a bunch of my brower’s history.

I understand why threads get pulled, and this is a private board and I’ll play by the rules set forth by JimRob and his moderators. I was just asking why the earlier one was pulled but this one wasn’t.

I now see that it was pulled due to an inappropriate source attribution.

Didn’t say create the crippled version - was trying to say that IF they have the ability to access it and the warrant is made for the search then they should facilitate the technical analysis just like any other lab contracted by the legal beagles.

They own the license and not the culprit’s data content. They didn’t commit a crime they should not be required to hand over their IP as there is no valid Probable cause to issue a warrant against Apple.

They can facilitate the investigation by providing their expertise -IF they have the ability to do so. If the software is configured in such a way that they can’t assist then that’s the answer. Sorry can’t help.

The feds or other LEs have no right to tell them how to produce the product and the warrant is only for the data on the phone which is the property of the phone owner.

My understanding was that LE was interested in the specific phone in question not in phones moving forward - though they would like to leverage this investigation to attempt to force such a backdoor for the future. To that Apple just says sorry not gonna do it not what our customers want.

Understand - I didn’t know if they had a way or not, but they can certainly attempt to provide the service just like any other contracted lab if they do have a way - though they’d have to maintain a chain of evidence custody and could have a non-techie LE do the monitoring in that regard.

The labs don’t have to provide their methods to the LEs but they do have to defend them in court - provided they have a way.

It actually is about the terrorist. All Apple has to do is do the unlock themselves and let the FBI have the phone. Really easy. If they don’t, their president is going to the clink for contempt. They are not handing over the keys to the kingdom. They need to cooperate in the interest of stopping terrorism. It is easy.

A) No such OS exists. B) Even if such a version of the OS is created, the phone still has to be brute force unlocked. The only thing the OS fix does is prevent the OS from installing timeouts after each attempt to enter the unlock code. C) Once an iPhone is unlocked, they'll have tens of thousands of requests from around the world in weeks.

Can Siri a way?

Made Murgia By Madhumita Murgia11:32AM BST 25 Sep 2015
new and easy method to unlock a locked iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running running Apple’s latest iOS 9 software has been discovered, along anyone to access the device’s photos and contacts in 30 seconds or less.
However, the flaw is only an issue for those who have not updated to iOS 9.0.1, the latest software.
All you need to bypass the device’s passcode is Apple’s personal assistant Siri.
You can do this by entering an incorrect passcode a few times, and then on the final attempt invoke Siri immediately. Ask it for the time, and use the clock app to type in a random word in the “Choose the City” field and share it.
Once you can share through the Message app, you can add a photo from the device which gives you access to the entire photo library on the iOS device. You can browse and view photos individually.
You can also select “Create New Contact” to access the device’s contact list.
Apple fixed the issue in its latest software update, iOS 9.0.1.

This hack comes days after French security firm Zerodium announced a total of $3m bounty rewards for iOS exploits and jailbreaks until October 31 - but the condition is the attacker must be able to remotely compromise a non-jailbroken iOS device.
In the case of this hack, it only works if someone has physical access to your iPhone or iOS device so it doesn’t qualify, but since the hack is relatively easy for novices to pick up, it’s a huge risk to your personal data.
This is the second iOS 9 hack discovered since the software launched - the first allows access via AirDrop.
How to Prevent iOS 9 Hack
Until Apple fixes this issue, iOS 9 users can protect themselves by disabling Siri when the device is locked from Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.
Once disabled, you’ll only be able to use Siri after you have unlocked your iOS device using the passcode or your fingerprint.

Turn off access to Siri when your device is locked

Thank you sir I’ll have another, eh? Suit yourself. :-)

Thought to ponder: It’s better to remain silent and have others wonder if you’re a fool, rather than opening your mouth and removing all doubt.

Yes, you should have followed your own advice about three posts ago.

“Intellectual” snot-nosed punks like you are unfortunately a dime a dozen on FR these days.

Sad. But please continue on your quest to have the last word.

“Yes, you should have followed your own advice about three posts ago.”

I’ll let the gentle reader decide who’s the fool in these parts... :-)

‘”Intellectual” snot-nosed punks like you are unfortunately a dime a dozen on FR these days.’

Intellectuals are all too rare these days, it is clear. Ad hominems are a fine indication of a lost argument.

“Sad. But please continue on your quest to have the last word.”

And here I thought that’s what you’re doing... Go ahead, you win. ;-)
