Go for it. Live in the suburbs though. Dearborn or Gross Pointe would be good choices. I lived in Dearborn for 20 years. My brother lives in Northville.
To work there? Got a gun, know how to use it? Cash in when you can, but live outside the war zone and commute. Save everything possible for a quick getaway if necessary.
Steel mill is likely in Ecorse, so you’ll likely look to live in Allen Park, Taylor or Gibraltar area (the “downriver” area). Lots of nice areas around there.
West Dearborn is nice. East Dearborn is more like Detroit.
Go for it. Get a carry permit when you get settled in, and everything will be fine. Just stay out of certain parts-the same as every other city.
I’d go——do a short term rental for a couple of months to get the lay of the land and see where you want to eventually settle.
Good luck,whatever you decide.

How crazy? you’d have to have a death wish.
There are some fantastic suburbs in the Detroit area.
Bear with me. I have a few more for you.
Every city has its nice parts. I live next to a city that has had one of the highest per capital murder rates in the country. The town I live in has some of the best schools and lowest crime rates in the country.
Drive five minutes and life is pretty bad.
You don’t HAVE to live in the middle of the crap to work there.
I hear that Dearborn is a nicely diversified suburb.
I’d live in a tent homeless first.
guy from Houston who moved to Detroit
A few more things about Michigan. To vote you need a drivers license. And we're not PC but we love our flag.
There's a good chance that someone in your grocery store aisle is carrying and you don't need a CCP to do that here anymore - or almost anyway...we do have open carry however.
I wish you much luck. You will do great.
Just stay away from 8 mile. It hasn’t recovered yet.

Michigan is a gem of a state. Lived in California over 10 years now, and miss Michigan tremendously...hope to get back one day. A summer in Michigan is unrivaled. Spring and Fall are great, too. Yeah, the winters can be rough, but fun too depending on where you live in the area. Northern and western suburbs of Detroit are some of the best places to live in the country.
Downtown/Midtown Detroit are booming and attractive places to live for younger folks (20-40s). Much of the CITY of Detroit’s neighborhoods are still a mess, but doubt you’d be looking to live in those places anyway. I say go for it, I lived in the city of San Francisco for years...and I think Michigan weather is better 6-8 months out of the year (March-October). Yeah, I know people might think I’m nuts, but that’s my opinion!
Which one would that be?
