Weeks after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, the island remains in crisis. Eighty three percent of people in Puerto Rico dont have power and thirty five percent dont have access to clean water. The death toll currently stands at 48 but is likely to keep rising in the coming weeks.
Washington has responded to this crisis with billions in immediate disaster assistance, helping the cash-strapped island afford its basic expenses after tax revenue has all but dried up. This financial commitment isnt going to end anytime soon: Experts suggest the final cost could exceed $100 billion.

Spain would declare war on us........again...............
Thats not jaded. Its the truth. Since dems cant win elections, everything they come up with is just an insidious scheme to get more votes.
Because we need two more Democrat Senators and x number more democrat Representatives?
Bah, let’s just pay Venezuela a few bucks to take them off our hands. They’ll be in good company then...
They should declare their independence ... then they wouldn’t have to wait on Washington for action to solve their problems.
Thanks was a very interesting read on the process for statehood.
This subject has been kicked around for so many decades. Who knows if it will ever happen.
I wonder too, if Puerto Rico became a state, who is next? The Virgin Islands? American Samoa? Guam? The District of Columbia??
I don’t want them in my country at all.
No, it is not right to force these proud Latinos into becoming part of our racist country. Time for USA to leave colonialism in the dustbin of history and finally grant them the independence they deserve. Viva Puerto Rico Libre!
The article is mis-titled. It should be “Why Washington should NOT make Puerto Rico a state”.
Fix their power grid, then give them their independence. We don't need a "state" with their level of political, social, and moral corruption.
It's better than making them a state, but it would give Florida's EV's to the Demonrats for perpetuity. Whose side are you on here?
Same and worse will happen if they become a state.
Think it through.
Offer veterans who have served honorably free parcels and mfg’d home loans if they agree to reside in Puerto Rico for at least 6 months + 1 day or at least claim it. Then they register to vote there.
10-year timeline.
Reverse invasion.
If you say it can’t be done, then you are part of the problem.
Make them a county of California and I’ll be happy. After all, they both handle money the same, they both hate America the same, and they both speak the same language.
Short of that, I’m with the PR Nationalists. PR needs to FREE OF US IMPERIALISM and thus needs to be an independent country.
make Puerto Rico a state
HELL and NO.
And don't EVEN think of asking again!!!
I’m down with the “reverse invasion” concept, but I will say it can’t happen— not because of me, but because the cultural Marxists in government and media will scream, “That’s RAAAYYYYYCIS!” And that will be the end of that plan.
Washington, DC has had a referendum and written a state constitution. It also contributes around 4 times as much tax money to the feds than it gets back in appropriations. In addition all the other capital cities of the world give full citizenship rights to their citizens. All the embassies in DC must look at this and think “what hypocrites these Americans are.” DC now has more population than Wyoming and Vermont. So why all this fuss about PR statehood when DC has done so much more to achieve it?
The same argument applies to DC where large numbers of citizens had served and died in a number of our wars.
I recently spoke with my son in PR. He says the economy is really doing well, there is lots of work. He thinks it may be because of insurance payments for those who had property destroyed or damaged. He is in construction and is very busy. Does anyone else have information?? or an explanation for what he is observing?
Here are the results at the Wiki article for “2016 Washington, DC statehood referendum.” Google for more info.

As you can see comparing DC’s 2016 with PRs 2017 turnout of 23%, DC had almost 65% turnout—massively higher. Of that 85.69% voted yes. Thus 51% of all registered voters in DC favored the constitution statehood referendum. So statehood had more than double the support of DC voters compared with Puerto Rico.
Turnout figures are not give for PR in 1998 and 2012, so no comparison can be made.
