Amputation and Diabetes: How to Protect Your Feet
Yahoo! Lifestyle ^ | August 29, 2018 | Self Magazine

Diabetes complications can include nerve damage and poor blood circulation. These problems make the feet vulnerable to skin sores (ulcers) that can worsen quickly.

The good news is that proper diabetes management and careful foot care can help prevent foot ulcers. In fact, better diabetes care is probably why the rates of lower limb amputations have gone down by more than 50 percent in the past 20 years.

When foot ulcers do develop, it's important to get prompt care. More than 80 percent of amputations begin with foot ulcers. A nonhealing ulcer that causes severe damage to tissues and bone may require surgical removal (amputation) of a toe, foot, or part of a leg.

Some people with diabetes are more at risk than others. Factors that lead to an increased risk of an amputation include:

•High blood sugar levels
•Smoking
•Nerve damage in the feet (peripheral neuropathy)
•Calluses or corns
•Foot deformities
•Poor blood circulation to the extremities (peripheral artery disease)
•A history of foot ulcers
•A past amputation
•Vision impairment
•Kidney disease
•High blood pressure, above 140/80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)

Here's what you need to know to keep your feet healthy, the signs you need to see a doctor and what happens if amputation is necessary....

Pre-diabetic, but probably well on my way to a diabetes diagnosis if I didn’t change direction.

These links I’m putting below changed everything for me.

I fasted for 30 days. It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t hard.

I lost about 40 pounds during the fast and have kept it off since I started intermittent fasting. 40# in one month. Will likely do another 30d fast Sept/Oct.

A similar video here (The Calorie Problem): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F5o0a4p_3U

Fung is a nephrologist from Canada. His practice and additional information is at the website (this is a link to fasting details): https://idmprogram.com/fasting-a-history-part-i/

When you want to go totally crazy you can watch a 6 part, 6 hour series. (Start at video 1 at bottom.): https://idmprogram.com/category/the-aetiology-of-obesity-lecture-series/

This was a very interesting post from a guy who did an experiment on himself - love handles in 21 days! https://idmprogram.com/smash-the-fat-calories-part-xi/

Lastly the Science of Fasting video (Russian and English): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1b08X-GvRs

Thanks for posting Jason Fung videos - never heard of him, but his science answers a lot of questions about my health. I’m going to try his ‘alternate ‘ day fasting approach. This may be the key to getting my health back. Again, thanks for posting (I’m up to video #4 )

You bet. It’s very powerful treatment. My doctor indicated I should continue and we would evaluate my status end of Oct. I will do another 30d fast prior to November. I’ve fallen back some here at the end of the summer, but still down 30# since May.

Day 1 of the next fast started today.
