By now, just about everyone has watched one or more local stores close their doors for good. Lowes, a hardware and home improvement store that has been around for 72 years, is closing around 50 of their locations just after Christmas.
Theyre the most recent victim of the retail apocalypse. Thousands of brick and mortar stores closed their doors this year as executives tried to staunch the bleeding in some companies and othersHere went bankrupt. Buyers are flocking to the internet to purchase their goods from companies with lower overhead (and thus lower prices.) And the economy, despite claims of grandeur, doesnt seem to be thriving for everybody.
Why is Lowes closing stores?

Always second fiddle to Home Depot......
They may become a parking lot.................
LOL!
Here is what happens. The lumber they get is bought through a broker. Universal Forest Products buys for Home Cheapo.
They order from a mill that will sell them the cheapest grade available and then broker it to Home Cheapo.
At the mill, if they havent got the best equipment, the lumber is sawn across the grain instead of the most modern method of curve sawing. Wanna see a “wigglebox” curve saw gang saw in action? Here it is.

What happens is that it doesnt cut across the grain and the result is that the boards dry straight where a saw that cuts across the grain, the board dries and warps.
Ain’t that the truth.
2 years ago I went to Home Depot with a neighbor/friend/carpenter to get wood fencing. About 150 6 foot boards. I swear he looked at each one and rejected 2 out of every 5 boards we took. Left dozens of crooked rejects lying on the floor. Even had an associate with a fork lift get down a new pallet and went through that. Took about an hour. What a mess when we left. I kinda felt bad, but he did not! Said it serves them right for selling split, cracked, warped, holey, inferior grade junk like that.
Home Despot stuck me with a bad returned water heater that they sold as new.
Crooks.
I had my plumber friend coming to replace the faucets in our 3 bathrooms. 4 sets. Of course I wanted them all to match. I went to Lowes. They had jack all. Everytime I’d find one I liked it would say...go online and order them. They had almost 0 stock. I even called a gal over and she said...yeah we don’t do much inventory. You have to go online and order them. I said....if I have to go online and order them why would I order them from you when I can get the same thing cheaper somewhere else? She just looked at me.
I went to Home Depot and they had stock to choose from.
False, false, false, and false.
Returns are a total disaster at Lowes and are often so fouled up they take 30 minutes.
False.
The Lowes online experience is just awful
False. And Lowes has a pick-up desk just inside the entrance.
Turn Old malls into assisted living/retirement apartments ... add medical services...makes sense

I really like Home Depot. Lowes, not so much.
The Quincy, MA Lowe’s is a minute’s drive away from a Home Depot that existed before the Lowe’s was built.
In my experience, the Lowe’s staff is more helpful and knowledgeable. You can find them when you need them. Home Despot? Not so much.
This is something O”bama should be proud of.
This is the economy he started, now its being reported on and people are acting on old financial information and old market conditions.
Canada? When America catchs a cold, Canada gets pneumonia.
The people are making the wrong decisions in the closures.
The Obama legacy lives on!!!
More evidence of his attack on the America economy.
It’s all Trump’s fault! s/
Using the proper terms about lumber, those imperfections are called "wane." Yes, wane mostly comes from the lumber milled from the out edges of the tree.
In sanctuary cities, counties and states that will develop before the 2020 election, more retail will fail and malls and big-box stores will probably be used to house the migrants welcomed in by the jurisdictions. Instant indoor soccer for the ninos and ninas.
Industry experts have said that Home Depot has better real estate than Lowes and has invested more in its e-commerce fulfillment.
...
Home Depot has a much better website, too.
Retail Apocolypse”? Really?
50 stores out of about 2000? Surely, general changes in neighborhoods and geographic retail areas account for some closings every year. This is hardly an “apocolypse.”
But “apocolypse” is a convenient word for the MSM to use in describing the economy in the Trump era.

This store was built after Hurricane Katrina, on a tract of land where the city bulldozed what was left of one of the best indoor shopping malls of the area during the '70s and '80s. Lowes saw an opportunity, given the number of homes there that people were going to repair and renovate.
Commercial redevelopment of the area has been - sluggish. Not because of the flood risk, either.
Maybe they shouldn’t have built them across the street or next door to a Home Depot.
Lowes and Home Depot get their framing lumber from artisans.
