When are we going to STOP lowering the US flag?

When will we stop lowering our flag?

I drove into work this morning, and AGAIN the flags are lowered. I see DJT has ordered it again, this time for the victims of the bar shooting. (No, it is NOT for Armistice/Veteran's Day, which means again BTW it will be down at least on Sunday.)

Not a week goes by our US flag is not prostrate anymore.

WADR, I appreciate the grief over yet another mass murder, but this is NOT what lowering the flag is for.

I am sick of seeing them lowered; it symbolizes we are constantly in mourning - constantly WEAK and VULNERABLE. Constantly bending to some force, however small.

This all started with 9/11. Before that, we went by the Code. Flag-lowering was for HIGHLY IMPORTANT officials at a national level, on their death (NOT John McCain).

I can certainly understand "bending" the rules for a MASSIVE atrocity like 9/11, but that does not mean every mass murder should get a lowered flag (sorry, even 50 does not compare to 3000 - and that was a foreign attack). Why not every thug killing in Baltimore and Chicago? Why not every time a serial killer strikes? Maybe for those actual accidents, like the NY limo accident?

My God, we are CONSTANTLY showing weakness. It is disrespectful to the flag, to the nation. Because it shows how cowed we are.

Lowered? When was the last time it was raised?

I agree. Our flag no longer flies proudly and instead, lowers itself in shame.

Thanks for posting this.

It is a longstanding pet peeve of mine. I hate this. It makes me feel as if we are a nation of snowflakes.

I understand doing it for Pearl Harbor. I understand 9/11. I understand when a President dies, even ones I disliked.

But this reeks of weakness to me, the lowering of the flag at everything that happens.

At home, I simply refuse to do it on my flag.

The simple solution is to follow the U.S. flag code.

But that is as outdated as saying, “follow the Constitution,” or “follow the law.”

May as well lower the flag to half-staff and keep it there. At least that will prevent wear and tear on the rope.

I know, if its not a shooting somewhere, then its a beloved local sports figure, or local long-time politician who has passed away.

Just curious, but after the shootout between the Earps and Clantons in Tombstone, did the news media storm the White House wanting to get an opinion from the President of the USA, and what should be done about it in the future?

We have become a weepy, womanly society.

I fly mine 24/7 on a flagpole. It almost never gets lowered.

When there’s an attack and Americans die, I want the flag raised high as a sign of defiance against forces of evil.

The Whitney Houston lowering was a disgrace.

Flags on sports uniforms, having the flag horizontally at sports games, on attire, etc. The flag code went out the window a long time ago.

I wondered about that also. It’s always down.

I got flamed for this same sentiment on several occasions here. The flag code is specific on when the flag should be flown at half staff and it does say the president can direct it.

However, being raised a military brat and also serving 9 years active duty myself, I have seen it flown at half staff for the death of presidents, for friends, for local military members and at my father and father-in-law's funerals. It has deep meaning when you see that. It is an honor.

For Whitney Houston and other events not related to the code, I just shake my head. It seems gratuitous, not an honor.
