“The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age,” wrote Dr Tony Phillips just six weeks ago, on 27 Sep 2018.
Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018 and Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding, says Phillips, editor of spaceweather.com.
Data from NASA’s TIMED satellite show that the thermosphere (the uppermost layer of air around our planet) is cooling and shrinking, literally decreasing the radius of the atmosphere.
To help track the latest developments, Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center and his colleagues recently introduced the “Thermosphere Climate Index.”
The Thermosphere Climate Index (TCI) tells how much heat nitric oxide (NO) molecules are dumping into space. During Solar Maximum, TCI is high (meaning “Hot”); during Solar Minimum, it is low (meaning “Cold”).
“Right now, it is very low indeed … 10 times smaller than we see during more active phases of the solar cycle,” says Mlynczak

Normal high were I am today is 69. It will top out at 39 today. Brisk, to say the least. But I ain’t complaining as it will kill all the mosquitos and the fire ants will be forced to go underground for a few months. Nothing worse than deer hunting with mosquitos buzzing in your ears.

Yes....and all along (for the past month or so) I have been blaming sun spots for my GPS periodically telling me it wasn’t working and my cell phone acting ‘strange’ at times.
Of course these ‘doom and gloom’ forecasters throw any kind of crap out there so if they are ‘right’ they are first and if wrong ‘well I went with what I had and projected’ while schools close 2 days early for a ‘bad’ forecast and supplies of ‘milk and bread and TP’ disappear from the shelves in lieu of the massive
FLOOD/BLIZZARD/ICE/HEAT (take your pick) panic will hit the streets....
OF course if one of the ‘calamities’ hit, then they get blamed for not doing there job....
We may get back to normal when the ‘resorts’ finally figure it out that people aren’t coming any more if the town is going to get shut down over a ‘forecast’...then again, Damned if they do, Damned if they don’t...
