The well-respected survey that’s been a barometer of American politics, culture and behavior for more than four decades finally got around to the question that has bedeviled many a household.
Dog or cat?
In 2018, the General Social Survey for the first time included a battery of questions on pet ownership. The findings not only quantified the nation’s pet population — nearly 6 in 10 households have at least one —they made it possible to see how pet ownership overlaps with all sorts of factors of interest to social scientists.
Like happiness.

Or it maybe just that happier, more active people tend to adopt dogs, not that owning dogs will turn an unhappy person into a happy one.
I personally tend to be a positive person and like and had both cats and dogs, also both at the same time. When I had both a dog and a cat at the same time, they also got along well with each other, did NOT “fight like cats and dogs.”
maybe it’s all the lonely, bitter, angry, democrat cat ladies who skew the stats.
Cat owners are democrats, dog owners are Republicans.
We have two cats and a dog.
We are happy on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
My cat of 19 years just died. I felt like I lost my best friend. Fortunately, I was adopted by a stray. He’s awesome! Couldn’t ask for a more loving friend.
It is quite amazing how strays ALWAYS seem to know how to find a good home!!!!
It’s the toxoplasmosis.
What about those of us, who happily own both? (Border Collie mutt, and purrbox of a big, black tomcat that loves to sprawl across laps, and ride shoulders).
Same cat soul. Different body. I’ve had this happen too. He liked the home and came back.
Nope.
Good point—media articles constantly confuse correlation with causation.
We have a dog our vet calls “the happy dog”—our mutt wants to play with everyone (people or dog) and has a big smile on his face all the time.
Dogs pee and crap. Get over it.
YOU moved into a congested city too crowed for animals. Do not blame the dog. The dog just does what he was designed for. Go find a cold, animal less city.
Very proud that our 80# Boxer is an inside Dog and never goes out of the fence. Plus he only barks at other dogs that their owners see nothing wrong with letting them pee and crap on my lawn. I even took down my fence on the street and moved it back 50 feet to keep my buddy away from the ruff-raff.
I am fortunate enough to have a gorgeous Maine Coon cat and two dogs (Blue Heeler and part Golden Retriever). The part Golden Retriever is the mother of the Blue Heeler.
Our Maine Coon is the undisputed head of the house and our dogs follow him obediently and happily.
I have both
Two Rottweiler males two years old and an orange tab
And a part time chihuahua
I ageee feminists likely dont like dogs
No kidding
My girl American bulldog on my homepage
Killed my mackerel tabby
Whereas my Rotts liked our cats
I did not move into any congested city so not sure why you are assuming I did. Dogs indeed pee and crap but do it on your own lawn.
That’s great and you are probably a responsible dog owner but I am not fine with dogs crapping and peeing on my lawn. Seems like to some because someone gets a dog in the neighborhood that gives them the right to crap and pee on any lawn they choose and if you say something about it you are an angry neighbor. Total BS.
