"They hate religion," New York Times columnist Timothy Egan wrote recently in a column titled "Why People Hate Religion," "because, at a moment to stand up and be counted on the right side of history, religion is used as moral cover for despicable behavior."
This is true only if you see religion as synonymous with white evangelical Christianity, the group that, polls confirm, shows high support for President Donald Trump. While Egan tips his hat to Catholics who are doing charitable work, it's clear that by "religion" he means the religious right.
But there are many of us people of faith in America as well who are taking a stand on the right side of history. Religion, in fact, is at the heart of resistance in the age of Trump. In an era where historic structural injustices have become mainstream policy, many turn to religion as a moral compass and inspiration for activism.
This includes communities of color and minorities of faith working tirelessly as on-the-ground activists every day, despite being singled out for abuse by the administration.
A Muslim-led fundraising project has raised more than $150,000 for bail of parents detained in immigration jails. The Muslims for Migrants campaign is dedicating the money to pay bond for immigrants caught up in the xenophobic and oppressive policy that targets desperate families. They have so far contributed to the release of 10 parents.

Exactly!
Religion, and especially Judeo Christianity, is the singular most important source for breadth, depth, and quality of life. Religion leads its follower into a rich and profound experience of living with purpose and happiness. Friendship, service, labor, recreation, even eating and sleeping, are given their greatest satisfaction by religion.
Atheism, by denying the authority, indeed the very existence, of God reduces life to a gasping struggle ending in death. Whether that death comes before birth or after years of bitterness, death as the end of all life is the bitterest of beliefs. Abortion signifies the abject worthlessness of life under atheism.
There is no greater joy than the promise of immortality after a lifetime of serving the Creator.
Hatred of morality in general and Christianity in particular is the core motive of every Democrat.
How much charitable work do Catholics do?
Not much, just this —>The Catholic Church is the largest non-governmental provider of education and medical services in the world.

Yeah, but they are not doing a lot of it for free, are they? I mean Catholic schools require fees. How much of the health are and education comes with a price either through payment or government funds?
Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that.
You must be Catholic.
So if your church marries gay men to women and in turn adopts kids within your church... then Alex, I’ll take Rev W”Right” for $200... and was the homo at your church, Alex for $1000 Who is Barrack Hussain Obama.
Yup it is is them chickens comin hone to roost religious people who resist -— God; and you know why they are on the down low and they say things like go low -— Hell.
Your comment doesn’t make sense, is illogical and just dumb. The Church gets it money from the laity. They don’t tax anyone or require a tithe. You wont get thrown in jail or excommunicated for not contributing in the basket. All are donations. Tuition is to pay teachers and run the schools. Secondly, if you cannot afford Catholic school the will work something out.
Another anti-Trump article.
re: Catholic most wealthy
That may be true if one counts the **priceless** treasures of Vatican chapels and libraries and other magnificent cathedrals, monasteries, and universities around the world....But....Thanks to the members of the Catholic Church these treasures have been preserved for all of humanity’s benefit, enjoyment and wonder. Also....It costs a ton of money to maintain these cultural treasures.
Personally...I am ***very*** grateful to Catholics who have done so much to advance art and science in our culture and are doing more than their fair share to preserve these priceless treasures.
I have to agree that they have preserved countless antiquities. That is awesome!
Biblical Christianity and Western Civilization are the twin pillars that produced and upheld personal liberty.
The Marxists and Muslims in particular want to destroy both to usher in worldwide totalitarianism.

Popular and academic discourse often treat faith- based foreign aid as if it were a new phenomenon. While the Christian NGO sector has grown rapidly in the last half century, its roots run back to the dawn of the 19th century, when American Protestant churches began sending missionary workers around the world. As with largely state-sponsored Catholic missionaries who were venturing out hundreds of years earlier, Protestants often targeted the least developed regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America. They spread religious teachings and, at the same time, offered educational and social programs that formed the foundation of many countries health and human services infrastructure. 8 Protestant missions activity predates and, in many respects, was the original model for the private humanitarian sector that boomed in the wake of World War II. 9 That history is so ingrained in Protestant culture that today, evangelical churches widely use the word missions to refer broadly to all of their international
The majority of U.S.-based international assistance organizations today are religious. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, 59 percent (3,505) of international development organizations in 2015 were faith-based NGOs, representing 40 percent ($12.5 billion) of gross NGO revenues... 11
A major and often overlooked difference between Christian and secular NGOs is that Christian groups particularly evangelical ones are almost entirely dependent on private donations, while secular NGOs rely more heavily on government funding. 14 This is often a deliberate choice on the part of Christian groups to maintain their independence, and it is a choice with potentially significant effects on the types of development projects Christian NGOs pursue...
Among religious NGOs, Christian organizations are the dominant players. Three of the six largest U.S.- based international aid charities are Christian, with combined revenue of $2.7 billion in 2014.7
Christian organizations have long had a large presence among faith-based NGOs in the United States. But in the post-World War II era, they grew to constitute the lions share, led by evangelicals. Among organizations registered with USAID and its predecessors, Protestant Christian groups made up 28 percent of all faith-based NGOs in 1940. By 2004, they accounted for 69 percent of all faith-based NGOs. 13
That figure almost certainly understates the presence of evangelical groups in international assistance, because most Christian NGOs do not receive federal funding and thus do not register with USAID...
Nearly 70 percent of respondents agree that churches should look to missions organizations and humanitarian organizations for guidance when deciding their missions priorities. - https://gordonconwell.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2019/04/USMissionsSurvey_FINALReport.pdf
it is per capita giving the shows whether a people are characteristic sacrificial givers, which can be an evidence of saving faith. (Hebrews 6:9,10) And in the U.S., much or most of Catholic charitable work in the US would be by your Catholic Charities, as "the largest private provider of social services to children, families, and individuals impacted by poverty," serving more than 10 million poor adults and children of many faiths across the country." But "Catholic Charities affiliates received a total of nearly $2.9 billion a year from the government in 2010, about 62 percent of its annual revenue of $4.67 billion. Only 3 percent came from churches in the diocese (the rest came from in-kind contributions, investments, program fees and community donations)."
