I review Pastor Greg Laurie's fantastic new biography of music legend Johnny Cash, and explain how Christians can be in the world but not of it.
I remember that he got religion in his last years. Actually always had a bit of it even when sinning.
The movie didn’t even mention it as far as I know.
What’s the problem with Johnny Cash? I am not aware of any negatives. Nothing sacred anymore.
Have some old tapes of his gospel music. Fantastic. Need a player now.

Johnny Cash had his problems. Probably his most famous arrest occurred in El Paso, Texas, in October of 1965. Cash had crossed over the border into Juarez to buy cheap amphetamines, which he had become addicted to in the early 60s. News reports said that he was found with 668 Dexadrine and 475 Equanil tablets in his luggage. He received a suspended sentence and paid a small fine, but the image of Cash being led away in handcuffs was not a hit with Cash’s conservative audience, as edgy as it may seem to contemporary eyes.
Between the years 1959 to 1968, Cash was arrested seven times for public drunkenness, reckless driving, drug possession, and memorably, picking flowers. In the small town of Starkville, Mississippi, Cash was drunkenly exploring the town at 2 a.m. when he decided to pick some flowers in someone’s yard. Arrested by local police, he was not a penitent guest at the Starkville jail; he screamed and kicked at the cell door so hard that he broke his toe. He later wrote a song about his experience that became a highlight of his At San Quentin album.
So he had his run-ins with the law.

My Father’s favorite was “Life”s Railway To Heaven”. The choir sang it at Daddy’s funeral. My Sister later told me that the same song was sung at Great Grand Daddy’s funeral.
He actually owned a small railroad. Just a single locomotive.
As have many in his business, but he saw the light, to borrow a phrase. June and his family had a lot to do with getting him turned around, they never gave up. Even Mother Maybelle Carter thought the world of him and would spend time when he was at his lowest instead of pulling back.
I guess you have to have that kind of pedigree to sing with authenticity.
This is an interesting tune. The protagonist is in prison in Folsom, Calif. for a crime committed in Nevada--a different jurisdiction. The prison is near a railroad along which passing trains head "on down to San Antone." However, "San Antone," aka San Antonio Valley, about 100 miles southwest of Folsom, has never had rail service.
My great Pastor was a late convert.

He also owned a sawmill which was also steam powered. I took Daddy there not too long before he died. Everything was scattered and rusted with trees growing through parts.
The old two story house was falling down.
During the 30s it won an award, I think from Progressive Farmer magazine as the most modern rural house in the nation.
No electricity but the house had hot and cold running water, a carbide light system which was as bright as electric ones. A phone system which ran to his relatives and was battery/generator operated.
I have a tshirt with the Cash flipping the bird. I keep it in the closet and sing Sunday Morning Coming Down when I see it.

Johnny's was truly best Columbo episode evah! Who didn't feel sorry for his being caught. Even Columbo seemed sad to have nailed him. Edna "needed killin'" as they say.

I’ve been reading the book. It’s really good. Always loved Johnny and Greg.
A good performer can make somebody else's song their own.
Chris also wrote "Me And Bobby McGee" but Janis owns it.
