Best Explanation of the Toilet Paper Crisis I've Read.
Blog Post ^ | 4/5/20 | TaoJones

Found this in some blog comments:

"Some smart people have analyzed the toilet paper hoarding and concluded it isn’t that at all. Their view is that there are two “channels” of TP production – commercial and domestic. The TP manufactured for commercial purposes is more utilitarian and less luxurious, is made to fit more industrial dispensing methods and is consumed by the pallet. Domestic TP is designed to appeal to one’s sense of comfort and luxury, a single roll at a time and is available in small multi-roll packs, generally.

Only a few manufacturers produce for both demand streams, and there is no simple conversion of one stream into the other to meet fluxuating demand. The result is that people are no longer needing to use TP when they’re out and about at work, at school, shopping, all the usual things. Instead, they’re confined to their homes and the vast majority of TP demand is now placed on the domestic stream.

This isn’t actually a hoarding phenomenon, with people cramming closets and storage units full of multi-packs of domestic TP rolls. Nor are they using more TP than usual. Instead, they’re NOT using the abundant supply of commercial TP because they’re not in the usual places to need to do so.

Eventually, the production of TP for the domestic stream could ramp up to meet the demand, but manufacturers need to anticipate whether things will return to normal before that might happen. That would leave an over-supply for a diminished domestic demand just as people are back to consuming the TP in the commercial stream.

Supply and demand will always come into balace over time.

Brilliant. And refreshing to see someone demonstrate the ability to step back and question things that seem so obvious (like hording being the explanation).

Complete bullcrap. TP stocks did not slowly dwindle to empty over time, as if suddenly demand for home TP increased while commercial TP plunged. NO, the TP shelves went bare in 2 days time and have never been replenished. That is hoarding. A slow changeover such as the article is suggesting from commercial to home use would have allowed a much greater time span for TP manufacturers to switch over, and would not have disrupted the supply chain either.

The article is complete hogwash. Hoarding is why the shelves went bare in 2-3 days.

"How many people do you know who take a dump at work?"

Someone making 2 "downloads" per shift at 15 minutes each who makes $30 per hour is being paid 50 cents per minute to ride the hoop.

That's about what I made per hour when I was a kid.

Hear hear. Let’s keep the price real low so Karen can buy 10x what she needs. Debby really really needs it and is willing to pay 2x price. Sorry Debby we made sure Karen could get all she wanted at the low price.

Here is anothe reason proving the article is complete hogwash.

TP is not the only thing depleted. Why is Chlorox cleaner and dish soap all gone and shelves bare. You really think the demand for those increased 10 fold in a week’s time just because we are not washing our hands at work anymore? I mean, how many office workers use Chlorox bleach on the job or use Dawn dishwashing soap.

Or baby wipes or laundry detergent.

Sorry, the article is completely erroneous. Hoarding is why it took mere days for all of these products to have left store shelves completely bare for a month.

Must be a slow day at af FR... discussing this crap. We don’t obsess over toilet paper like so many do. We just go to Costco or Walmart about twice a year and buy one giant size case of paper towels and asswipe. That’s it.

Not sure I agree. TP was wiped out of stores long before mandatory stay at home orders.

The warehouses at the tissue mills are full. They can hardly find a place to put it.

Manufacturing has kept up with demand -distribution and transportation hasnt.

I was reading a story today on BBC about the flour shortage in England. There is apparently not a shortage of flour, there is a shortage of equipment to put it in consumer sized bags. If you want to buy a hundred pound sack, or a truckload, the supply is fine. Want a pound or 5 pound bag? Good luck.

But speaking of shortages - apparently a large condom manufacturer in southeast Asia (Malaysia?) shut down. So you might want to clean out the local stores ahead of a shortage.

“How many people do you know who take a dump at work?”

It always makes me feel like I’m a winner. Have I ever timed it and calculated how much I got paid to do it on the clock? Yes I have. (I won).

NO, the TP shelves went bare in 2 days time

The hoarding started almost exactly when POTUS declared a national emergency. It was a day or so after that when I went to a grocery store and saw the paper products aisle completely cleaned out.
