Patreon has lost a lawsuit they filed against fans of Owen Benjamin, a comedian kicked off the platform due to hate speech concerns, and now will have to pay millions in arbitration fees. Last year, Owen Benjamin was kicked off of Patreon for violating their terms on hate speech. Benjamin then encouraged his fans to sue the site, given they had participated in, in legal terms, tortious interference with a business relationship.
Patreons terms included language that allowed any users of the plaltform to litigate their case individually under Californias JAMS arbitration scheme.
Under California law, Patreon would have to pay the arbitration fees up front, as each user would have to be dealt with on a one to one basis. These fees range from a few thousand dollars to over ten thousand dollars per case. It is unclear how many users intended to sue the platform...

Hope this goes a long ways to cancel the cancel culture.
Youtube should be next. Foursquare, too.
Consumers are getting savvy to arbitration clauses and using mass arbitration requests for arbitration as a legal DDOS attack.
Bkmk Patreon
“Youtube should be next. Foursquare, too.”
Won’t work - no business relationship.
Really funny comedian. Check him out on you tube
Excellent. Now I hope all the people they ran off come back and run the into the ground with claims for damages.
Owen Benjamin is a legend.
More pisspoor writing. More of an epidemic than the coronavirus. No wonder people don’t know anything. They read this crap and cannot process it for accuracy, meaning, and context.
The virus will eventually die out. Poor journalism is growing expedentially.
If anything, filing and winning suits against left wing outlets will only succeed in finally getting us tort reform, nixing nuisance suits, etc. They won’t put up with it, and will get it changed, unlike the spineless do-nothings on the right.
No kidding.
What did he say?
Is that not the crux of the story?
What? Patreon sued the fans? Does not compute.

The lawyers always win!
“...such as Carl Benjamin, also known as Sargon of Akkad.”
I’ve heard of Sargon of Akkad, but couldn’t tell you a thing about him.
“Once again the lawyers win.”
But it sounds like they did a good job this time...they earned their $$$.
They basically counter-sued the fans(Owen’s Patreon subscribers) to get out of the arbitration rules they set in their own terms of service. Now they are forced to proceed with arbitration, which they themselves have to pay for.
I thought it was a Tequilla but that’s Patron.
Thanks for picking up the journalist’s slack!
