I finally watched Game of Thrones

Two years after it ended, I finally watched the series Game of Thrones. Okay, you can tease me for being a few years behind everyone else. But I don’t have cable TV at all, let alone HBO. So there was no reason I would’ve seen Game of Thrones while it was still on the air.

But every year for my birthday, I buy myself something. So for my 58th birthday last month, I bought the entire digital box set of Game of Thrones to see what all the fuss was about.

If nothing else, I finally understand all those GOT cultural references people have been using for the last decade.

I’ll say this about Game of Thrones, it sure isn’t boring. I haven’t read any of the books the series is based on, and I probably won’t. I’m not much for reading fantasy. I hated the Tolkien books with a passion when I tried to read them decades ago. It’s just not my thing.

So I admit, I went into Game of Thrones not expecting much.

Boy, was I wrong. It is really excellent.

Though, there were some things I didn’t particularly like. Actually two things specifically.

First, is it grisly as hell. Gory... During the Battle of Blackwater Bay, one guy gets the top of his head cut clean off. Grisly, grisly stuff.

But I suppose the fact that I was completely grossed out by the gore is a sign that the special effects are really good.

Second, like most premium-channel shows, the sex and nudity is over-the-top and gratuitous...

But other than the occasional “intestines splashing to the ground” and too-graphic sex scenes, Game of Thrones is one of those shows you can’t stop watching. It is epic scale storytelling to be sure....

I finally watched Season 8 the other week. I don't see what the fuss regarding the ending was all about. The ultimate "winner" surprised me.

I knew Daenerys was going to go crazy. I just didn't expect it was going to be that crazy.

The amount of graphic pornographic sex in the first season and to a lesser extent the second is really quite beyond the pale, but later seasons are not that bad. Many episodes have nary a hint of sex or nudity.

The person I watched it with left the room when Jamie threw Bram out of the tower and refused to watch anymore. She really missed an opportunity see one of the most fascinating character studies on film in Jamie.

Get ready for the prequel: House of the Dragon, the first season consisting of 10 episodes, and scheduled to air in 2022.

I never even got through the first series of Downton Abbey. Awful.

I’ll stick with K-Dramas.

Funny, I couldn’t get through G0T at all. I tried I really did. But the show has too many characters, too many plot lines, and just when you can wrap your head around any of them the writer(s) killed the characters and plots off.

Sure we all have our own personal tastes and preferences and yes, it is very grizzly and gory. But for me, it was completely unwatchable because it’s impossible to follow the story. Which is fine for an art piece, like The Other Side of the Wind by Orson Welles (on Netflix, with a companion documentary by Peter Bogdonovich).

HBO has recently licensed a lot of the old Turner Classic Movies library. A lot of the old MGM films. I have been watching them. Some of them produced 30-40 years before I was born. When you have downtime, scroll through and see what catches your eye. I saw Barry Lyndon, which is beautiful, and Lolita and 2001 in my own personal Stanley Kubrick marathon last weekend. Also watched some Bogie, and even the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Great stuff on their stream right now.

You need to read the books first. You may not even want to watch the show after that.

"the sex and nudity is over-the-top and gratuitous..."

I bought Season 1 a few years ago after someone in the local bar recommended it. I got through maybe two or three episodes before I'd had enough of the rumpy-pumpy goings-on.

Downton Abbey wasn’t that great either. Didn’t even bother with the movie. Try watching Barry Lyndon. It’s about 3 hours of beautiful film making, starring Ryan O’Neal as an Irishman rises and falls in the era of King George III. Shot completely using natural light, even indoor scenes, with very specialized lenses.

we binge watched it last month. if someone told me a year ago that I would ever get tired of seeing Emilia Clarke naked, I’d have presumed he was crazy.

but after watching GoT, I was tired of seeing Emilia Clarke naked. I mean, she’s naked A LOT.

We didn’t watch GOT until season 7 started. We also don’t have cable and have missed every major tv show. It was epic but the ending was hurried and a big letdown.
To give you an idea of how far behind we are one of our next scheduled binge watches is Breaking Bad.

King Joffrey reminded me of the young King Richard II who came to the throne as a boy and was such a tyrannical monster he got deposed by his own cousin, Henry IV.

That's not what Shakespeare thought of Richard II, if I remember rightly.

I suspect Roman emperors, or maybe Italian Renaissance tyrants or Oriental monarchs, were the more likely models for Joffrey.

No. It’s not excellent.

It’s like a drug of abuse.

Start reading the books. They are great and then you can see how the dialogue dropped off when they had no more books to work from.

And then you can be really annoyed that GRRM may never finish the next book much less the series of books.

I was rereading some of the books and reminded me of the love he showed for Bran. I always thought Tyrion would be the winner but in a way he ended up in control.

It’s a completely pagan worldview without Christ’s mercy or forgiveness or the recognition of the value of the human person. Nietzsche would have loved it.

If you skip breaking bad go right to Better Call Saul. Absolutely great.

I’ll second that, the books are much better than HBO’s show. I didn’t care for all their changes.

MaBell acquired TCM and all the other Turner properties via their purchase of Time/Warner, IIRC.

GOT is much better than The Walking Dead.
(Both shows seemed in competition with each other.)
Storyline, moving along, and the good sense to end in season 8.
