A downside of the record sales in firearms is that the price of said firearms is also at record levels. For many, that could mean that you’re priced out of an AR-15 or a Glock handgun. While there are probably good options in “used” firearms, another option is to build one instead.

You can get a decent 9mm for $350, it would cost more than that to build a Glock.

I’m seriesly thinking about 3-D printing an AR lower receiver mold, transferring the specs to a more heat resistant material, then having the base for making more of them.
There was a YouTube video showing someone making one out of soda cans.

Beer cans would be better.

You might want to look into lost wax casting.
In this method, the image of the final is printed in wax (low temp plastic), then vents for escaping air and additional material is added. A mold this then made from plaster or small grit sand. From there, the mold is heated to remove the wax/plaster. The remaining mold can be used for metal casting. Aluminum works well but you may want to add small amounts of other metals to make a stronger alloy.

One of the nice benefits of building your own is that you can spread the cost out over time. Buy a part, buy a part there...
Also, you can spec it out the way you want--exactly. No need to compromise on a certain part/feature if you really want another certain part/feature.

I should have said beer cans since I can’t drink sodas.
Coffee hasn’t kicked in yet.

I can (but don’t) drink sodas. But if I’m making a DIY AR receiver out of cans, they’d have to be from beers that I drank myself.

Stupid clickbait - the reason for making 80% firearms is NOT about saving money. They end up costing significantly more than buying, even brand new firearms.
Building your own AR will require a modest amount of specific tools, and you can spread the cost out over time, but you won’t save much. Learning about your firearm and being able to maintain and build your own has its own intrinsic value.

Well, since I work at Coors, material supplies shouldn’t be a problem. We get 3 free cases a month.

Buying an AR in pieces can save you the 11% excise tax levied on complete firearms. You could save money, but I think most plow it into upgrades. And DIY is, as you say, its own reward

I can’t drink that light beer. Last time I tried, I wore myself out getting to and from the bathroom every three minutes. I usually stick with Banquet or Killian’s Red.
