The headline in the Scottish Daily Express succinctly summarizes the reaction to a recent invention by Australian Dr. Philip “Death” Nitschke: “Outrage as scientist backs gas chamber ‘death pod’ scheme for Scotland.” Nitschke has become notorious over the past several years due to his high-profile promotion of his “do-it-yourself death pods,” airtight capsule-shaped pods in which the suicidal can seal themselves and release a nitrogen gas that will knock them out in 60 seconds and kill them within 10. It is not as swift a death as the lethal injection method but does have the benefit of ensuring that other people do not have to be involved.
Nitschke first marketed his “Sarco” death pods to the Switzerland last year — a prime definition for “suicide tourism” where people can travel to have themselves killed in a variety of spa-like resorts created for that purpose. “Sarco” is short for “sarcophagus,” but the device is designed to look like a spaceship to symbolize the send-off to a new “destination,” as one Swiss suicide provider noted. The Sarco pods have been displayed in the Netherlands and Germany but have only been used in Switzerland. Nitschke hopes that his death pods will become widely available through downloadable designs and 3-D printing.

And sarah Palin was laughed at for mentioning death panels. Now here we are. Gotta wonder when they will mandate these pods to deal with conservatives they deem dangerous because of the promotion of free thought expressed through free speech. And THEY said it couldn’t happen?

I don’t understand the use of such a complicated device. Apparently, you can order a suicide kit over the internet that’s a drawstring bag with a small cylinder of (I think) nitrogen. There’s no sensor in the lungs for nitrogen like there is for CO2. An overload of CO2 will create all sorts of discomfort. Nitrogen displaces the oxygen, and you pass out and suffocate without any discomfort.
I once worked in a huge industrial building with a controlled access work area that had a code-locked door. On the other side of the wall was a gigantic nitrogen tank. Some pipes that brought nitrogen through the controlled access area to a place where it was used began to leak. Everyone in the room died apparently unaware there was a problem. Someone opened the door and saw everyone on the floor and fortunately didn’t go in. My understanding is just a couple of breaths, and you would pass out.
I’ll bet Medicare has already assigned them a code and a copay.

You don’t suffocate with nitrogen, I’m not certain on the specific scientific terminology but nitrogen is an inert gas; meaning your body/lungs don’t react to it like CO2, you just die.
Well, since the eco Left views carbon as a pollutant that must be reduced, this would be a Soylent Green solution for all those who want to help the war on civilization.
That doesn't happen. The gasping reflex is triggered by excess CO2 build-up in the lungs, which never occurs with this method. CO2 gets exhaled normally, but what you inhale has no oxygen. You just quietly pass out, and in about ten minutes you're gone.
As far a I'm concerned, I want one. I'm not ready yet, but at 77 I'm becoming aware of the endless horror of being warehoused in a "care facility", as is already happening to some of my contemporaries. I spent a week last year in one recovering from surgery, and that was more than enough.
