On December 1921 at 22 Hans Place in Knightsbridge, a treaty was signed between a provisional Irish Government and the British to create what was called the Irish Free State. However only six months later, a few hundred yards away in Eaton Place, an assassination occurred, the reverberations of which could be said to have helped start the Irish Civil War in 1922.

At around midday of 22 June 1922, Field-Marshall Sir Henry Wilson unveiled a war memorial at Liverpool Street Station. He made a speech, quoted some relevant Kipling poetry and soon after returned by taxi to his home at 15 Eaton Place in Knightsbridge. Two 24 year old men, Reginald Dunne and Joseph O’Sullivan, were surreptitiously waiting for his arrival. They watched while Wilson paid for his taxi before running up to him and killing him in cold blood on the footsteps leading up to his front door. In Dunne’s words...

This part of a note submitted to the court (not read to the jury) by one of the men executed echoes the situation in this country today.

There is and can be no political liberty in a country where one political party outrages, oppresses, and intimidates not only its political opponents, but persons whose religious opinion differ from those of the party in power.

This was one of the best of the regular postings from this site.

Irish politics are complicated but the gist of the reason for the Irish civil war was that Eamon DeValera knew up front there was no way the Belts would ever agree to a treaty that the Irish people would be happy with. He didn’t want to be the one to eventually take the blame so he sent Michael Collins to negotiate a treaty.

The best deal Collins could get was An Irish free state less the 6 counties in the North which are Often referred to as the 6 sorrowful countries. The Brits needed a place for the protestants to run to.

Eamon DeValera refused to accept or sign the treaty and he and Collins fell out. At that point Michael Collins, only 32 years old was running the whole country. He was wildly popular and engaged to be married to a beautiful girl, Kitty Kiernan.

Eamon Devalera co-opted the IRA which Collins had resurrected and turned them against Collins. The civil war that resulted from all this was in full swing when supposedly dealers sent word to Collins that he wanted a meet up with him down in Cork county near Skibereen which was Michael Collins home town. Collins was warned not to go but he’d had a very close relationship with Dealers for a long time so he went in an armoured car and escort and spent the night drinking in a bar in Skibereen waiting for word to meet but Devalera never showed up. The next morning Collins and his people headed back to Dublin and after they had traveled a short distance the IRA ambushed them at a place called Sam’s cross. The whole country went into mourning. Devalera is reported to have lamented later that he would never have any kind of recognition or a legacy because everyone blamed him for the killing of Mick Collins.

DeValera was a real piece of work. Even went to the German Embassy to sign the condolence book after Hitler offed himself.

Yes history was not kind to Eamon DeValera but he brought it on himself. Personally I don’t think any treaty would have made him happy. He just hated the Brits. And he was jealous of Collins because of his popularity with the people. Michael Collins viewed the original treaty as a stepping stone and hoped that in time all of Ireland could be reunited.

My brother in law and I drove over to Skibereen and sat in that bar and drank one night. You can feel the ghosts. (We’re not Irish or anything 😆)

Then we drove down the road looking for Sam’s Cross because we wanted to see the spot where Mick Collins got shot. It was so foggy I’m not sure if we found it or not but there’s a place in the road where there’s a cross high up on the hill either cut into the rock or attached to it but it looked like the perfect ambush site.
