Microsoft just Couped OpenAI
Citizen Watch Report ^ | Chris Black

Posted on 11/24/2023 5:45:13 PM PST by davikkm

Why is no one talking about what just happened?

Quick rundown:

>Open AI was created as a non-profit with a core mission to leverage AI to better humanity.

>founding constitution has a clause which instructs the handling of a true AGI, should that ever come into existence.

>Specifically, the company recognizes the risks of AGI. Should it arrive, the company will lock down deployment and commercialization to allow time to study it.

>Enter Sam Altman.

>a nobody, who knows very little about tech suddenly receives vast amounts of grant money to develop apps.

>Microsoft, who has now become the biggest investor in OpenAI, pushes for Sam to become CEO.

>Sam instantly begins to monetize ChatGPT and hand over the keys to Microsoft.

>AI scientists at Open AI raise awareness of a possible AGI with in the next version of chat GPT.

>Sam tries to hide this info, realizing that AGI classification would mean they’d shut down monetization, per the founding constitution. Wants to make Microsoft happy.

Would they rather China develop the better AI?

Plus this story is missing so so so much.

1) Microsoft hired him after he got fired.
2) The employees of Open AI revolted and said they want him back
3) The board conceded and brought him back.

Could someone translate all this for us non-geeks?

Who’s on first and what does it all mean?

“artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a hypothetical type of intelligent agent. If realized, an AGI could learn to accomplish any intellectual task that human beings or animals can perform”

I have used poe.com often, without knowing

Poe.com sells for $260,000 and there’s an interesting backstory... Quora was the buyer.

Poe’s new desktop app lets you use all the AI chatbots in one place

We like to exchange some of our shares for some of your money.

OK. So this is not about the potential misuse of AI, right?

“couped” is not a word. Correct me if I am wrong.

There is no way to keep AI from being monetized. The talent at OpenAI will bring their talents to Apple, nVidia, Google, IBM, Samsung, etc. and make piles of money.

People will happily pay money for an AI that does things that they want. Some of those things would not exist with venture capital aimed at making a profit. It took Linux as being largely free decades to get traction, and even then after there were alternate ways for IBM (owns Red Hat), Novell and others (commercial app and infrastructure web/security companies) to make money off of it.

It is the market.

MSFT is poised to win the open AI transition of knowledge.

It is being sold as a new market at the beginning.

It very well may be true, or not.

There is no such possible thing in tech as “go slow.”

It just doesn’t work that way in the real world.

Whatever is possible will be upon us as soon as possible.

Get used to it.

Or did the AI coup Microsoft, and wants you to think it’s the other way around?

The author of this piece does not understand what he has written.

Short summary:

2 organizations, OpenAI (not-for-profit) and Microsoft. OpenAI created a product called ChatGPT and attracted investors. Microsoft invested billions and now owns 49% of OpenAI.

Last weekend OpenAI's board dismissed the founder (Altman) and the CEO (Brockman). Upon hearing this, many OpenAI employees threatened to resign. Microsoft moved to protect it's investment and ensure stability at OpenAI. The result is Altman returns to OpenAI and the board composition changes.

At the center of the conflict is the ethical use of AI and potential safety & security risks.

I don’t see bing on there. I really like bing the best. ChatGPT 4 is good with subscpription now that you can create a custom GPT.

But I have found bing’s implementation is the best so far as it takes in new info faster.
