Study Finds COVID Vaccination Independently Associated With Long COVID Syndrome

People who receive two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine may be more likely to develop long-COVID, a new study finds.

In the study published in PLOS One, researchers examined data from 487 and 371 individuals at four weeks and six months post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, respectively, to estimate the incidence, characteristics, and predictors of long COVID among patients. Long COVID symptoms were reported by 29.2 percent of participants four weeks following infection. This number dropped to 9.4 percent at six months, indicating symptoms may diminish over time.

Researchers found that the greater the severity of infection a patient had, the more likely they were to experience long COVID. The incidence of long COVID at four weeks of follow-up in those who experienced mild/moderate disease was 23.4 percent compared with 62.5 percent in those with severe cases.

At six months, the incidence of long COVID was considerably lower. For those with mild/moderate infection, only 7.2 percent reported symptoms compared with 23.1 percent in those with severe/critical cases. The most commonly reported symptom was fatigue. Other symptoms included cough, cognitive dysfunction or brain fog, and loss of taste and smell.

During the four-week follow-up, patients were more likely to experience long COVID if they had preexisting medical conditions, a higher number of symptoms during the acute phase of COVID-19 illness, if their infection was more severe or resulted in hospitalization, or if they had received two COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Although previous vaccination was associated with long COVID, the authors could not find “any interaction effect of COVID-19 vaccination and acute COVID-19 severity on causing Long COVID.”

Let's look at what the authors of the paper actually say, not what some antivax content creator at The Epoch Times has to say.

For two doses of COVID-19 vaccination, the odds ratio of Long COVID for acute COVID-19 severity was 7.5 (95% CI: 3.1,18.4), and for zero to one dose of COVID-19 vaccination, the odds ratio was 7.4 (95% CI: 3.5,15.8). This analysis rules out the possibility of interaction between COVID-19 vaccination and acute COVID-19 severity.

Interesting. The odds ratios were almost identical. And, looking at the entire 95% confidence interval, it is huge.

A 95% confidence interval means that the actual incidence number being estimated falls within the given range 95% of the time. This means that 5% of the time, it is not within that range. When the range is so large, the numbers are less robust.

Overall, the study is not a very strong one. It was based on telephone interviews of people who had previously been tested positive for Covid. There is a huge problem with reliability of any study based on subjective answers to questions. A much better methodology would have been for the Covid survivors to get an actual diagnosis from a medical professional. That would be more expensive, true, but would also be far more objective. Perhaps they don't have the funds in India to do a more robust study.

I do find it interesting that the study was published a year ago and only now did the professional antivaxxers on The Epoch Times staff manage to find it and twist it to give an antivax spin to it. Does this mean that the professional antivaxxers are running out of scientific material to misrepresent? Does this mean that the efforts of scientists to educate people are interfering with antivax fearmongering campaigns? One can only hope.

I generally disagree with exdemmom on all the shots business, but she makes her case, and sticks around, taking the flak. We don't have to attack her personally just because she takes an "establishment" point of view on some medical issues.

I would just suggest, ExDemMom, that repeatedly attacking the Epoch Times as "professional antivaxxers" is not an argument. Epoch Times is Falun Gong, a group that most of us have little in common with, but see their mistreatment at the hands of the ChiComs deserving of sympathy. And like the Moonie run Washington Times, is capable of providing useful information.

In any event, attacking the Epoch Times for being professional antivaxxers but never acknowledging that the true pros in the argument is big Pharma who profits directly, and big media who lives off of big Pharma these days.

The quality of published research has declined in direct proportion to the degree of politicization of the University system, which has hit STEM because STEM stood by while admin positions, humanities, classics, and English were completely taken over while STEM stood by comfortably, thinking it was safe.

The result? Published research at the highest levels gets the same suspicion that MSM news reporting gets. The more that government coercion is used to force the narrative, the more suspicious the narrative.

Actually, I don’t think they want to even talk about it, but, my doctor did put in my medical records that I have Long Covid, and listed it as a disability. Now I’m trying to get SS to recognize that as well since the current White House occupant listed Long Covid as a disability.

So do I, but this has been with me since last summer (2022) and there is no end in sight. Thankfully I am semi mobile and can get the normal things done, but I had to retire because of it and the toll it took on me in the workplace. I got my basic government retirement and social security coming in so I’m not broke, but I applied for disability with the SSA (Long Covid, Obstructive Sleep Apnea) and I also applied for a VA disability (hearing, tinnitus) as well. So we’ll see how things play out. MY doctor also wanted me to apply for a VA disability for PTSD and I’m awaiting the VA to process that as well. And as all this plays out, I’m also trying to find a place to move to that is closer to my daughter. Lots of moving wheels!
