Sutter Buttes, California:

"Sutter Buttes", from "A Tapestry of Time and Terrain" (US Geological Survey)

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Outdoors; Science; Travel
KEYWORDS: buttes; california; mountains; yuba
The page linked in the header has a wide variety of panoramic images, mostly geological and cityscapes in the Far West and Pacific NW. They might have high-resolution images and prints if asked (I don't know).

Sir Mix Alot wrote a song about buttes. He was quite the geologist!

I like big buttes
those of alkali
made mostly by Orogeny
when a girl walks in
with a plagioclase
and a dry wash in your face
YOU'VE HOT SPRINGS

One thing I loved about being a Geology major... saying things like “Orogneies lead to thrust faulting and overturned beds” with a straight face.

I think so, just as long as there aren't any cracks about cleavage.
