Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

That Big Buddy heater is indoor safe and has a CO detector. I use it for my ice fishing house. Use it with confidence keeping warm inside!<<<

A hundred degrees, might tempt me to go fishing, in the ice never.

Thanks for posting the Big Buddy information.

Have you thought of Solar, in post 1720 I posted part of the plans for a do it yourself solar heater.

Interesting. At present I have 2 gallon sized bags of citrus peels in the freezer because I do use them where fire ants bother me. Now the question will be, if I make candy out of some, will I ever be able to have fire ant dope again. I’m afraid Lloyd likes candy much more than I do.<<<

It is easy to solve that problem, take out a handful or two for Lloyd’s candy and grind the balance up....NOW!

You will be ahead of the game.

old unmatched cotton socks and kept them washed with her child’s diapers.<<<

The liberal/greenies push buying them and reusing them now, I have read their articles and a couple ads.

Some of the socks would work very well.

Olives are addicting. Remember what I said about me and sweets, okay now reverse that for olives. LOL<<<<

I love olives, we took trips to the desert to buy them and I can’t remember where it was, we lived in San Diego, and went a couple times a year for the olives and dates.

Their olives had hot peppers, garlic and herbs in them.

Spring flowers in desert are something to see in life though. We might have to do that.<<<

In the 30 years I have been here, I have seen them once.

In the California desert it was almost every year.

There are several out of the ordinary things I have in my kit for some odd purpose - again, that would be a good thing for me to share with ya’ll in the daylight when I can look at the kit.
<<<<<<

Please do let us in your kit.....

Peroxide is a quick way to stop bleeding, learned that one from the Bird magazine, as a bird can bleed to death, if it pulls a feather that was not ready to be shed.

I use it on dogs and cats.

They are also using lots of white sugar to fill wounds that won’t stop bleeding.

I have seen drought conditions worse 2 times since 1975 and that particular report said it’s not been worse since 1917. Not sure if that’s a global warming scare tactic or what. We are bad, but it hasn’t gotten to what the reports say.<<<

The Calif. group has been posting and it appears that there is real trouble there, it is so dry that some farmers are not planting.

They are saying that Calif will have rationed water by June.

Don’t forget to make candied orange peels, while you can.<<<<

Gosh, it is really easy...

Cut about 4-6 orange or lemon peels or a combination thereof - Limes would work too - into strips about 1/4 inch wide and then cut to 3/4 inch lengths -

Put it into a small saucepan and add 2 cups of white sugar and about a cup of water - boil for about 15 minutes and then let it sit to soften and absorb sugar (about an hour) heat again while stirring and bring to about 232 degrees F. or till a thin strand of it will turn to a crackling thread in cold water. I like a bit of cinnamon which I now add and stir well. I am sure other flavorings could be added too. I then stir it just to keep the pieces separate until it cools enough for the pieces to remain individual pieces.

Some people like to cook it a bit less and then roll it in granulated sugar, but I let the sugar crystalize as it cools. Store airtight...

Enjoy... (I rate this one as super-easy)

http://www.webpal.org/b_recovery/3_alternate_energy/electricity/all_low_rpm/low_rpm_index.htm

[Almost every line is a link]

Low RPM Generators
This is the main page on this site regarding the construction of generators. While many of the examples are regarding wind driven generators, the principles regarding the generators themselves apply equally to other motive sources. Anyone contemplating building a low rpm generator should look through all the sources on this page. Those persons specifically building a wind generator should also look at our “WIND” page which has on it many things specific to wind generators such as towers, blades, tails and testing them.

Comparison of Generators and Alternators

Most generators and alternators (like off of a car) need to revolve at around 1800 rpm (that is they have to make 1800 revolutions per minute in order to generate power) and it is often difficult to get a third of that speed with most homemade wind, water or other sources.

Overview: Comparison of Alternators and Generators

SEALED: Comparison of Alternators and Generators

This is the SEALED mirrored version of this site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe.

Low RPM Generators and Alternators

Since the difficulty with most generators is that you have to turn them too fast before they start generating power these low RPM ones are neat because they put out power at low rpm and so will work with a bicycle, a low head water source, or lower wind power.

The low RPM generators will start generating power at around 100 rpm and remain efficient up to about 600 rpm. Their “sweet spot” is often around 400 rpm but it will vary from generator to generator.

SEALED: Wooden Low RPM Alternators (SEALED)

This is a SEALED mirrored site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe. This and the link following give more information about building wooden generators. Much of the information is available through the open links.

SEALED: Alternator from Scratch (SEALED)

This is a SEALED mirrored site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe. The reason that they are mirrored here is that hopefully this way the information will be available later - even if the open links no longer are. Special plans are being made to protect to protect these pages and to distribute them afterwards.

Brakedrum Generators and Alternators

Brakedrum: Use the brakedrum off an old pickup truck to make a low RPM generator!

Although the literature says these brakedrum generators are easy to make, we made ten of them and found it a considerable challenge. Nevertheless, they all worked reliably and are very durable.

SEALED: brakedrum_update

This is the SEALED mirrored version of this site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe.

Front Disk Generators and Alternators

There seems to be a trend away from brakedrums to disks. Talking with Hugh Piggot, he tells me that he is writing a new book on this subject.

Disk 1: Forcefield Low RPM Disk Alternator

SEALED: Forcefield Low RPM Disk Alternator

Disk 2: Making a Volvo Front Brake Disk into a Generator

More details from the same source - on the same idea.

SEALED: Making a Volvo Front Brake Disk into a Generator

Wooden Generators and Alternators

Some wind generator designs can be put together very quickly. You can carve less elegant blade designs in an hour or two. Some motors can be used as generators. People have gone out and stuck their wind generators up on top of a hydro pole that is not being used. Hopefully the need is only temporary anyhow, until a more permanent source of electricty is re-established.

These may not produce so much electricity as a metal based generator and may be not as durable but they may be more accessible for one of the main components.

Simplest: Wood Axe

This one is particularly fast to build. Even if you don’t build it you should study this one because the pictures and explanation by Force Field are so excellent.

SEALED: Wood Axe (SEALED)

This is this SEALED mirrored site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe. This and the two sealed links following give more information about building wooden generators. Much of the information is available through other open links.

SEALED: Homebrew Windgenerator (SEALED)

Wooden 2: all the plans and information for another wooden one

BUT these are 9 pages of plans mirrored in .pdf format from Home Power Issue #88 are ones that you can download and print off NOW.

Wooden 3: A key set of plans to study

These are 49 mirrored pages of plans in .pdf format are ones that you can download and print off NOW. While you may not build this unit - you should definitely study these plans from Hugh Piggot because they give you details on many subjects such as how to build a coiler, the winding of a coil and how to wire the coils together.

SEALED: Additional Info on Coils (SEALED)

This is a SEALED mirrored site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe. Much of the information is available through other open links.

On-line Info: Lots of info on build it yourself windmills

This is a link to Hugh Piggot’s website. Hugh lives in Scotland. This is probably the world’s most authoritative source for build it yourself windmills. For those who look into it ahead of time they can get Hugh’s book. We also have a .pdf file from Hugh (available on our low rpm generators page) - that gives LOTS of details.

On-line Info: North American Source for Hugh’s info.

This is a link to Bob Budd’s website. Bob has built lots of Hugh Piggot’s brakedrum windmills, and he has put out a superb video on how to do it. I have watched the video many, many times with many people and have talked with Bob tens of times, and have gone to visit him and see his windmills in the process of our building ten generators ourselves.

Other Generators and Alternators

Microwave Oven: Making a Microwave Oven into a Generator

This is a particularly neat idea and there are lots of neat ideas at the Windstuff Now site.

SEALED: Making a Microwave Oven into a Generator

This is the SEALED mirrored version of this site that won’t be opened until after The Great Catastrophe.

Testing

Experiment: Testing your theories

Here are some experiments done by another individual developing a low rpm generator. It is an example of the kind of approach that you may wish to take.

Sealed: Testing your theories
Same as above but sealed until after the Holocaust.

>>>>I have no faith in the news givers. All lies anymore.<<<<

I hate to break this to you guys, but taint nothin new...

The first time I REALLY understood that politicians would lie through their teeth to you was in December 1962...

I was in the Army, and we had been mobilized to Homestead AFB in Florida - When JFK and Jackie came down there and welcomed all the cuban refugees - (Press reported Jackie’s welcome that was in Spanish as the big news) I had a top secret and cryptographic clearance along with most of the others in my ASA outfit. I was one of the ones who was selected to be posted about 20 feet from the podium with my trusty M1 Carbine..... Anyway, I heard what was said - not just over the PA system, I was close enough to hear their voices... Well, JFK invited all the patriotic Cubans to go to the tables that were set up around the perimeter and sign up for a force that we would arm, equip and train to invade and liberate Cuba... They did by the hundreds and hundreds...

Well, a few of the papers added his invitation after they swooned over Jackie’s Spanish sentence. Immediately, there was a huge denial that he had said any such thing, he was being mis-quoted in the press - Guess what... for the next two weeks, that whole base was in a state of turmoil - trying to muster all the Cubans OUT of the Army - Oh, yes it does take longer to get someone out than in.....

Events in Dallas and the School Book Depository and Jack Ruby, etc... I don’t trust newspaper reports on that...

Then there was Lyndon Baines Johnson - I had some insider information on some of the shenanigans pulled down in Johnson County... like ballot boxes somehow fell off the back of the pickup from outlying (non-supporting of LBJ) polls on the way to the Court House to be counted... (and never found) Then there was another election that was contested and before the ballots could be recounted - wouldn’t you know - the Courthouse burned to the ground - with the ballots all inside. Gee - dimocrats won again...

But, I swear, I don’t know about voters either, even when they know the backgrounds, they gravitate to the ‘good ole boy’ in a race... I once campaigned for a candidate who was running for County Judge for Parker County... He was a young, smart, straight thinking fella with a Law Degree and was working in his father’s law firm - the opponent was a kid who had been kicked out of 3 different colleges (party boy) had never succeeded at anything.. His Daddy who owned the local Cotton Gin was trying to find something he could do - ANYTHING he could do besides partying... Guess who won... Yep. Partyboy by a landslide. Oh, he was a dimocrat.

You may have heard of the lawyers family.... His mother was Mary Martin (remember Peter Pan) and his brother was Larry Hagman (Remember Dallas TV program)..... Yep, Lawyer Gary Hagman didn’t have a chance for County Judge - Party Boy partied for years in office...

LOL See Wneighbor - Lloyd isn’t the only one who gets that way....... ;-)

Absolutely great suggestion - Actually, keep HUGE quantities of it on hand - It is also an excellent fire extinguisher - The dry chemical fire extinguishers are what the trade calls Ansul Purple K - it is baking soda with an anti-caking agent.

When I was with Southern Airways, we had 38 crash trucks each with 500 pounds of it that was propelled with nitrogen for fires.
