KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- After last-minute debate over external tank insulation, the shuttle Discovery is poised for launch early Tuesday on a three-spacewalk mission to deliver more than seven tons of supplies, experiment hardware and life-support gear to the International Space Station.

Since there’s no gravity in space, technically astronauts could move the supplies, no matter how heavy by themselves.

The Discovery? They're still flying her? How old is she now, twenty years?

Best of luck indeed.

I think inertia might still be a problem with heavier loads.

The ice-frost ramp foam loss was more troublesome because Endeavour's flight was the second in a row in which insulation fell away from a specific IFR. Engineers believe the insulation popped off when air trapped in voids in the foam expanded due to atmospheric heating during ascent. [emphasis added]

Ah ha!!! Is that the difference between the old CFC-based foam and the newer CFC-free AlGore foam? If so, I move the Columbia accident investigation be reopened as a murder investigation.

The astronauts are also flying at the same velocity.

According to the current schedule, Discovery will be decommissioned in 2010.[2][3] Discovery will be the last space shuttle to fly on mission STS-134.

What, “no gravity in space”? I don’t believe it.

You shouldn't ... gravity is what keeps things in orbit.

I am curious as to why they have the flaps up while in orbit.

I have no idea, but my guess is that they go into that configuration when they are powered off or something.
