Computer Screen Has Gone Wobbly---HELP!!!
Self | August 28, 2009 | PJ-Comix

Posted on 08/28/2009 3:15:03 PM PDT by PJ-Comix

I have an LCD flat screen computer monitor. I turned it on a little while ago and most of what I see is wobbling slightly. However, I do notice the extreme right side of the screen seems to be steady (insert political joke here).

I restarted my computer but the problem remains the same. The brightness of the screen remains the same as before so I don't think this is because the screen is somehow fading.

Anybody know how I can fix this.

Could be a bad LCD monitor. My last one was a Dell and lasted about 3-4 years.

The dying symptom was that the thing kept turning itself off, and finally it wouldn’t stay on for more than 10 seconds.

So I got a new Samsung SyncMaster widescreen for $200.

And by the way a new Dell XPS which is a great computer bargain, and the second DVI/HDMI video output is plugged directly into my 42 inch HDTV.

I have a 22” Samsung SyncMaster. Bought at Office Max for just under $300 last winter. I love it.

Ill second the cables, a loose cable will do that, I have a computer in my shop doing what you describe, it is a bad video card. I am guessing you don't have a video “card” in that computer, so this could be a terminal problem. If you have another monitor try that one in the computer see if that helps. You could then try that monitor on another computer to see what is faulty. I work for beer, if you drop it off at my place I’ll have it back to you by morning.

The image on the screen is wobbly?

Do you live next to an MRI Clinic?

If your monitor has a “Degauss” option do that... it’s cool looking.

I’d probably put even money on this.. I’ve never seen an LCD act like this.. CRT’s sure, but LCD’s? Not in my experience.

I would say that the first step is to isolate the problem.

The only way you can do that is to hook it up to another computer to see if you get the same symptoms. If the symptoms are the same, it's a monitor problem. If symptoms disappear, it's a computer problem.

PJ, please return and let us know the results of your investigation.

I must have gotten mine on sale, I’m pretty sure it was just over $200 but maybe memory fails me.

I have a SyncMaster 24-inch at work, it’s even nicer.

Look at the refresh rate. That usually is the problem for me.

I had a laptop that did that when the video card went. If you don’t have a video “card”, it could be the graphics chip on the motherboard going bad, overheating.

Have you cleaned out your case lately? Dust and dirt cause a buildup of heat. Heat kills.

I shut down the computer and tightened the cables on the back of the computer. No change. Maybe this is a wakeup call to get a new computer AND monitor. My computer is almost 4 years old and was thinking of getting another one next year. Anyway, despite the vibrations, the screen is still readable.

BTW, my big thing is to buy groceries at INCREDIBLY LOW prices. Like today I bought 4 packages of Nathans hot dogs for about $2.40 total due to a combination of sale and coupons. On Sunday evening, I bought a total of 12 Boston Market TV dinners for a grand total of about $7.50.

So perhaps if I look around, I can find an incredible deal on a computer (and monitor).

1) Power supply is going bad.

or

2) Inverter board inside monitor is going bad.

If either one is the culprit, then it’s time to get a new monitor. It’s just not cost effective to fix them anymore.
