The history of anagrams plus some fun examples
Examiner.com ^ | June 23, 2010 | RĂ©ne Girard

Are you familiar with anagrams? You probably had fun with anagrams as a child. An anagram by definition is: a word, phrase, or sentence formed from another by rearranging its letters. A simple example is the word "no" whose only anagram is the word "on." A more complex example is the word "Angel" which, by rearranging it's letters, gives us the word "glean."

The website fun-with-words.com , with help from The Anagram Dictionary by Micheal Curl, reports on the history of anagrams: According to some historians, anagrams originated in the 4th century BC with the Greek poet Lycophron who used them to flatter the rich and mighty. Other sources suggest that Pythagoras, in the 6th century BC, used anagrams to discover deep philosophical meanings.

In Roman and early Christian times, anagrams were often believed to have mystical or prophetic meaning ...

Here are some excellent examples of anagrams that also make a lot of sense: ...

Listen = silent

Angered = enraged

...

The eyes = they see

Debit card = bad credit

Desperation = a rope ends it

The Morse Code = here come dots

...

Election results = Lies, lets recount

...

Clint Eastwood = Old West action

...

George Bush = He bugs Gore

The terrorist Osama Bin Laden = Arab monster is no idle threat

The president of Iraq, Suddam Hussein = Press had to inquire if this man's dead

...

Presbyterian = Best in prayer

...

I was clearly making a joke in my post #3. I kind of assumed you were also making a joke (a much better joke than mine). But I see that "O Arabic snake ambush" is a true anagram of Barack Hussein Obama.

That's really chilling.

the one about Saddam should say “enquire” but it still doesn’t seem to be a perfect anagram - looks like it’s one letter off

I like “free pub relic”

free = no cost
pub = establishment where alcohol is served
relic = aged
so free single malt scotch sounds good

and free because a company had a marketing event, not free because taxpayers actually paid for it.
