On this day in 1868, the Democrat majority expelled all 28 African-Americans from the Georgia state legislature. The ousted legislators, all Republicans, had offended the neo-Confederate establishment by supporting the civil rights of emancipated slaves.
Henry Turner (R-GA), an AME bishop and state legislator, was one of the most influential African-Americans in the 19th century. In his last speech before being expelled, he said:

The biggest tragedy of Reconstruction was the failure to build a permanent biracial Republican Party in the South.
A huge tragedy was that the murder of Abraham Lincoln put a Democrat, Andrew Johnson, in the White House.
The Republican Congress tried to undo the damage, but the effort never overcame the months lost during Presidential Reconstruction. Lincoln’s one big error had proven fatal.
Yes, selecting Andrew Johnson as his running mate was the worst mistake of Abraham Lincoln’s life.
