Just watched the new 'Sherlock' series, Episode 1, lady in Pink. Thought I was tuning into the traditional rendition by Jeremy Hines(?) But founf myself watching an updated series, with Holmes & Watson, in contemporary times. Watson just back from Afghanistan with war wounds.
Wasn't campy or or overacted IMO. The upating weas a nice twist, while still remaining mostly true to the core of the stories. Don't want to give any spoilers, but Holmes "cocaine addiction" has been given a "PC update", and the explanation of his personal life, has as well. BNut it was fun seeing Holmes using a computer, cell phone, and texting.
Looking forward to next weeks episode.
Anyone else have an opinion, good or bad?
Wouldn’t mind seeing that. I must have watched each of the Thin Man movies a dozen times over the years. Hope they don’t screw it up.
My husband. He has TCM on all the time!
In case it holds true for your PBS channel, Mine is showing two back to back episodes of the Casebook of Sherlocl Holmes, starting at midnight, followed at 1 am by an encore of the new Sherlock ‘Study in Scarlet’ Episode.
If you are a night owl, or can record/PVR it for later.
“’The Thin Man’ has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob [Marshall] at the helm, I know we’re in great hands,” said 47-year-old Depp, who is also set to star in movie remakes of the classic TV shows “The Lone Ranger” and “Dark Shadows.”

No word on the setting of the film. No reason given as to why Depp wants to do film remakes of TV shows...
Couldn’t agree more. It was well written and more than held its own against the older versions. It was Jeremy Brett by the way.
Jeremy Brett was the BEST Sherlock Holmes, hands down.
More about the Depp “Thin Man” remake:
“The project is out to writers for a take that would give a Sherlock Holmes treatment (meaning to contemporize the attitude but retain the period setting)”

When I realized it was updated to modern times, I almost didn’t watch - thought it would seriously screw up a good thing. I thought it was terrific - basically stuck to the general personalities of the characters and had a great story-line. Well done, and i’ll watch it again. Never a fan of Jeremy Brett - too hammy and overdone for my taste.
Hmm. Updated ‘eh. How long before they utter the phrase “No sh*t, Sherlock”...
I watched it and liked it enough to watch it again next week.
I am so used to HD, etc., I find the ‘darkness’ of these Masterpiece productions of late quite unpleasant. I wonder if they have inferior cameras or lighting or if they just plain like it dark because it is a ‘mystery’.
And I got the impression that Sherlock is more or less asexual from his comments to Watson on this show.
Jeremy Brett was and is the gold standard.

Hubby and I really liked it. He rarely watches anything but Military Channel and Fox News so I was surprised. He even wanted to know if there would be another one next week. lol
No other Holmes for me but Jeremy Brett may he R.I.P.
Thanks for the link.
I stumbled upon it. BIG WIN! Loved the texting.
