In 1946, the United States conducted a series of nuclear weapon tests at Bikini Atoll in what’s known as Operation Crossroads. A total of two bombs were detonated to test the effects nuclear blasts had on naval warships. The second, named Baker, was the world’s first nuke to be detonated underwater. Due to the unique properties of underwater explosions, the Baker test produced a number of unique photographs that the world had never seen before.

Thanks for posting, but now that song will be in my head all day.

“We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when...”

Saw the link.

It looks as though there's an aircraft in the air. (To the right of the explosion... Looks like a PBY Catalina?)

The image is stunning though.

The ship that got tossed into the air, creating the black smudge in the mushroom column, was battleship USS Arkansas. Oldest and smallest battleship in the fleet (pre-WWI, mounted 12” guns rather than the 14” and 16” of later BBs), but still a pretty substantial-sized ship.

Wonder why it’s being reported as if they recently learned of these leaks?

Interesting fact. Just sitting reading this post, you have over 500 kilo ton of energy. The earth is moving through the galaxy at about 1,300,000 mph or 361 m/sec. Your body is almost all water which is denser than ice. The reader of this post has 22 times the energy of explosion.

I don't know about that, I've been feeling pretty lethargic lately. I think I expended all my boom when I was in my 20's.....

My Dad participated in these tests while in the US Navy after the surrender of Japan. His ship USS Hughes. DD410 is at the bottom of the Bikini Atoll.

Holy carp! That must have carved-out a huge hole in the ocean floor. I wonder how much - millions of tons of - underwater debris was blown skyward? I can’t even begin to think of the ramifications of that blast. Thanks for the link!

These particular leaks were discovered recently. There have been hundreds of similar leaks over the years. What's your great interest in pushing this?

That was just and Atom Bomb. The first hydrogen bomb was 1952 with exponentially greater yield..

That's when they went from kiloton to megaton. It was Operation Ivy at Eniwetok Atoll. The device was Ivy Mike. My father was there.

I apologize for asking you one question about the media reports.

I’ll ask someone else.
