A CALORIE is a calorie. This truism has been the foundation of nutritional wisdom and our beliefs about obesity since the 1960s.
What it means is that a calorie of protein will generate the same energy when metabolized in a living organism as a calorie of fat or carbohydrate. When talking about obesity or why we get fat, evoking the phrase a calorie is a calorie is almost invariably used to imply that what we eat is relatively unimportant. We get fat because we take in more calories than we expend; we get lean if we do the opposite. Anyone who tells you otherwise, by this logic, is trying to sell you something.
But not everyone buys this calorie argument, and the dispute erupted in full force again last week. The Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a clinical trial by Dr. David Ludwig of Boston Childrens Hospital and his collaborators. While the media tended to treat the study as another diet trial what should we eat to maintain weight loss? it spoke to a far more fundamental issue: What actually causes obesity? Why do we get fat in the first place? Too many calories? Or something else?

You get fat from stuffing your face and parking your dead ass in front of a computer screen!
Here is a very good website on probiotics and how to make them and what to buy:

I drink Lifeway kefir, which you can get at Aldi’s if you have one. Trader Joe’s probably has them too.
I also do alot of lacto-fermenting of my garden vegetables.
Check my post #122.
Move more...eat less. That is the ultimate weight loss program. Not to complex, but apparently too difficult for many to implement.
Was it the wheat or was it the carbs?
I suggested earlier that consuming “Kefir”, which is like a yoghurt smoothie, and is sold in grocery stores, would be a good way to start. It contains 10 or 12 different types of probiotic bacteria. Some people make their own Kefir, which looks somewhat like cauliflower, but I prefer the drink, which are both flavored and unflavored.

You might also add some Acidophilus beads, which are enteric coated to get through the harsh environment of your stomach and duodenum, thus releasing more bacteria in your small intestines. ‘Pearls’ brand, which is expensive, now has several generic knock offs that cost less than half as much.
Oddly enough, instead of thinking of “killing off” the bad bacteria, it is better to think of “muscling it out” of its physical space by consuming good bacteria.
A good way to do this is to also consume Dannon Activa yoghurt, very common in stores, which contains an odd probiotic bacteria called Bifidus Regularis, which noticeably adds fiber-like “bulk”, almost like Metamucil, thus aiding considerably in promoting ‘regularity’.
Finally, I’ll add that increasing caution should be used when taking antibiotics anymore. The great concern is that they will wipe out enough of your healthy flora, while attacking the pathogen, that it will create a “space opening” for a “population explosion” of another, antibiotic resistant bacteria, of which there are now at least a dozen major ones. Some of which are deadly.
These bacteria are already there in your gut, but kept down to a minimum by your healthy flora, but when your flora are damaged, it gives them an opening to bloom.
Therefore, after consulting with your doctor, you should consider alternating your antibiotics schedule with probiotics. For example, taking antibiotics with meals, and probiotics in between meals. Again, only with doctor’s permission.
Even Kroger grocery stores now carry Lifeways Kefir.
Is red wine healthy for gut flora?
You’d think not being alcohol is antiseptic, but I imagine being alcohol it gets absorbed long before it reaches that point. Red wine seems to help my stomach.
LOL!
I know people who will circle around a parking lot 15 times rather than walk 200 more feet.
I use dried red peppers ground up really fine (korean style). They make it hot but its a good hot and a far deeper flavor. Used it on some nice pork ribs this weekend.
I also make a habanero pineapple salsa thats quite good. I don’t use the seeds so its not burning hot but you get the fruity flavor of the peppers.
I am not sure how to get through to you
This would be AN EXPERIMENT
Try it
Eat Nothing but steak and vegetables for a week
Don’t tell me what you have done or not done in the past, or like to eat or prefer to eat...it’s not relevant.
You are obviously dissatisfied with the results so STOP DOING THE SAME THING over and over (!!!)
Thanks Altariel.
No surprise for me. :’)
Is there a nice central source for all of that, with details and how-tos?
Not really. Everything is breakthrough right now.
How about Seafood?
Just polished off a platter of Salty Oysters with Coleslaw on the side.
I have a freezer full of steak... 1 week would barely put a dent in it ... as far as veggies go are you talking Fresh or Canned?
Little windy for BBQ or Grilling so I’ll be cooking indoors.
I’ll give it a shot for a week.
TT
Thanks, and fair enough. I saw your earlier post, but after the one I responded to, that has the link on the biota paper.
It does not matter as long as it is meat protein (including seafood), vegetables (fresh are always better, then frozen, then canned), eggs, and milk
- ONLY - !!
Not even a cracker or slice of bread or bowl of cereal. If the shrimp is breaded- you cant have it. Since it is an experiment, do it right - or dont bother.
When I shop, I go down 2 aisles, the fresh meats and fresh vegetables.
my house is empty of anything else, and I lost 50 pounds since I started doing this (from 260 to 210- which is my perfect weight for my 6’5 frame)
I work out a little too- it feels so much better. Nothing crazy, slow and steady with some free weights- if you feel it the next day, you know you did something right.
A gluten-free diet changed my life completely (basically not one single crumb of bread)
Meat and vegeatbles, milk, eggs, fruit is all I eat and lost a lot of weight and feel much better
Bread in any form now gives me major heartburn
