Five mountain lion cubs mothered by Teton Cougar Project research animals have met their ends in the jaws of wolves over the past few years.
Now a Jackson Hole female cougar appears to have exacted vengeance.
A lion tracked by the Kelly-based science institute for the past six years is documented to have recently dined on a yearling wolf, Cougar Project biologist Mark Elbroch says.
Whats nice about this particular incident is that this is a collared mountain lion, and we know for sure that she killed it,

While not unheard of, proven cases of lions killing wolves are far from normal, scientific literature shows. Wolves killing lions evidenced by the Cougar Projects experiences is much more common.
Through 2008 there were three reports of cougars killing wolves in North America, Jackson Hole resident and biologist Mike Jimenez wrote in a short entry to The Canadian Field-Naturalist. One of the unlucky lobos was one of the original Yellowstone imports Wolf B-4.

Problem for the cats is that wolves travel in packs. One on one an adult lion can take a wolf.
mountain lions are opportunistic killers, and they typically are not choosy about prey
We have mountain lions where I live although you rarely see them. The locals (I live on acreage far out of town near a big state park) talk about the lions being risk averse - i.e. - they only attack prey they can easily kill without injury and for that reason they avoid large dogs. Then again, there are so many deer and solo coyotes it’s probably easy pickings.
They are fascinating animals and I wonder how much we really know about them. I have a 90# German Shepherd and she runs in the woods often - I am sure she has crossed paths with a lion. Even though the cats could kill her easily she is still trucking without a scratch outside of some porcupine quills.
Filet of Canis lupus Tartar is a Kitty delight. :-)
One mistake in the commentary....that’s not a juvenile lion. It is a fully grown female. Females make the kill and the males feed afterward. And she takes a good goring to her right flank.
That’s uncalled for. This is FR- not Democrat underground
There are LADIES present here.
Sorry...wrong ‘lion’ thread. Oops.
“mountain lions are opportunistic killers, and they typically are not choosy about prey”
Which is why if I ever came face to face with one in our forest I would not give it the opportunity to be choosy.
Our state has a lion season and they can be killed out of season if one feels threatened.
Lions eating dogs/wolves, A million Koreans would agree.
The beauty of collard cougars culling collard coyotes is more coin.
That's sorta my attitude too...
Lupus tartar is now on the Mountain Lion menu. :-)
They are around up here where I am at also, (Not as common to see as Coyotes and Bears), but they are here. The deer are VERY much in attendance year round also so I’m sure that is a reason the predators like it here. The Deer are an easy dinner for ‘em whenever they decide to ‘dine out’ I guess!
