Robin Williams, the famed comedian and actor, died on Monday at age 63.
He had a remarkable career, and was one of the funniest people of all time. But beyond his career of making people laugh one of my favorites being his role as Vietnam-era radio personality Adrian Cronauer his response in 2007 to troops in Kuwait who basically turned their back on him is one worth remembering.
Williams was there for a USO tour for the soldiers, most of whom were either headed to Iraq or supporting combat troops already there. In the middle of a bit, Williams and the thousands of troops in front him hear a trumpet sound.
It was "Retreat" a signal to those soldiers that the American flag was being taken down at the end of the day. At its sound, the custom is to face the music, stand at attention, and salute. In this case, Williams is left on stage, watching thousands of soldiers turn away from him, and he has no idea why.
But in the video that was later released, we see the comedian, brilliant for his improvisational skills, realize that this moment is a special one.

And, I respect the fact that he put his money where his mouth is, by going overseas to entertain the troops.
Bob Hope stands heads above other comedians and he was the best when it came to serving our troops with his comedy and wit!
Robin, I’ma let you finish but “Bob Hope stands heads above other comedians and he was the best when it came to serving our troops with his comedy and wit!”
You left out a part.
I would like to believe that. But like Tom hanks they don’t have the balls to stand up for their true beliefs so eff them.

He even wished a troop “Merry Christmas” and shook his hand towards the end.
I never found him funny at all, at any time in his career. Just my opinion. But then again there very few comedians who don’t just irritate and annoy me.
Everything you wrote was true.
He was however, one of the biggest supporters of our troops and the USO. He was often the first to go out and support them.
His politics aside, he was a great funny man and we owe him thanks for supporting our troops in ways you and I could not.
'Tis why I donate to the USO, and why entertainers who are a part of the USO have my respect.
