On Monday when Afghanistans President Ashraf Ghani visits Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland will once again serve as the venue for important geopolitical negotiations on seemingly intractable issues, a role it has played for more than seven decades.
But as Secretary of State John F. Kerry and other Cabinet members host the Afghan president, one major U.S. figure will not be present President Obama.
The presidents absence is just one signal of how the role of the cloistered compound in the Catoctin mountains has changed under this president, a city dweller who prefers gym workouts and golf courses to hiking trips or fly-fishing expeditions.
For several of Obamas predecessors, Camp David was a critical refuge from the public spotlight and a chance to spend time outdoors, as well as a forum for soft-touch presidential diplomacy.

Sometimes you just want a beach vacation......or a golf vacation.....or just a getaway with the boys.
Flatten it, cover it with sand, and build a mosque and replica of the Kaaba.
Punk-ass city boy needs cars n fumes n bling n choom.
Spoiled son of a beach.
Too American
Too many guns....
I still can’t believe this absolute piece of crap is President of The United States. The longest running nightmare in US history and it has two more years to go.
What’s funny is that Camp David would be perfect for the Man’s weekends I would have. Lots of shooting and then some good food, scotch, and a movie.
It would be like a big playground.
Yep! And I would even offer to help mow the lawns or even till some perfect sunny patch of ground for a veggie garden full of tomato plants.
soft-touch presidential diplomacy.?
barry knows nothing of diplomacy of any sort!!
Can bet that the neighbors are happy.
Chopping wood. Taking a run in the words.Sitting by the fireplace and reading a good American history book. Single Malt and a cigar.
Or, I could be putting up curtains at a foo foo cafe in Martha’s Vineyard.
Nope...too WHITE.
Something merely and fittingly Presidential isn’t enough for 0bama, America’s first Sith Lord.
The comments after the article were pretty bad for BO. Isn’t the Post a liberal rag?
Knowing some that live up that way, they are NOT disappointed.
I would love Camp David. I love rustic “camps” because I grew up going to rustic places. I love it. I would ride a horse for half a day, go on walks and sit by the fire. Sounds like heaven to me. Plus, I wouldn’t have to cook or make up beds.
H3ll froze over for a moment. The comments at WaPo run against 0bama and his ‘wife.’
