Port Royal was called "the richest and wickedest city in the world" or "the Sodom of the New World."

Suddenly, JUNE 7, 1692, an earthquake and tsunami sank Port Royal under the sea, followed by violent aftershocks...

Interesting. The 500-1000 year storm / event is something that is likely not economically feasible.

Any idea as to why certain words have been blacked out?

I suspect nothing is blacked out. The text has justified margins so they just left extra spaces to push words out to the right.

Myself, I *do* think there have been words erased: not formatting. I suspect whomever did it simply did not approve of some form of honorable salutation like “captain” for a blackhearted, murdering, raping outlaw.
