I really don't care that I catch all kinds of criticism for buying a Toyota Prius

What is the point of the hybrid? I understand it allows changes to be made at some point if gasoline becomes extinct, or moves beyond 10% ethanol, which is the same thing.

I don't think folks criticize a car. They criticize the owners.

“My wife only me to allows me...

That tells me something right there.”

Made me laugh so hard it scared my big ole dog.

We were among the last in the neighborhood to acquire a pri.

Most have a ‘fancy’ German car, a van and a pri or two.

If I drove more miles every day I might consider it...............but I don’t and I am very comfortable in my 2016 Tahoe.

“It also makes you a better citizen: You embrace the speed limit...”

It also makes you the slowest car in the slow lane - never get behind a Prius or a baby Prius.

Of course there is nothing wrong with saving money. The problem is, as the poster who ran the spreadsheet reported, the price of gas has to at least double from its current level in order to do so when buying a Prius over a similar conventionally powered car.

I drive a CB250 17 miles to work. It gets 70+ mpg. It seems to be fairly economical. I have an Elio reserved. It will get similar or better mpg and I won’t have to wear a rain suit in bad weather.

All the extra money you pay for one of those things, especially the Tesla, will buy a lot of gasoline. And if you are counting on subsidies to buy that cute little car then you are simply making me pay for your car.

What did you pay for it? Is insurance higher? Have you actually calculated the cost per mile? How much does it cost to replace the batteries? Seriously asking.

Below is a list of MSRP battery cost details for the various hybrid Toyota models offered since 2001.

2001-2003 Toyota Prius (1st generation) - $3,649
2004-2009 Toyota Prius (2nd generation) - $3,939
2010-2011 Toyota Prius (3rd generation) - $4.080
2012-2015 Toyota Prius Liftback - $3,939
2012-2016 Toyota Prius V - $3,939
2012-2016 Toyota Prius C - $3,807
2007-2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid - $4,892
2012-2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid - $4,892
2013-2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid - $4,892
2006-2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - $6,198
2011-2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - $6,353

Each of these prices will be reduced by a $1,350 “core credit” for the old battery pack being replaced, which the dealer then recycles through a long-established Toyota program.

I just paid between 4 & 6 THOUSAND dollars for a battery, but WOW I get $1,350 back! It’s almost free. /s

Once these batteries start failing these cars will be worth ZERO and they will become the new Edsel.

It used to be the most expensive thing to replace in your car was an engine or transmission, now it’s the BATTERY!

“I don’t understand the premise of being criticized for buying a Prius.”

It is called the Pious because owners typically are holier than thou “I’m saving gas so I am better than you” types.
