I really don't care that I catch all kinds of criticism for buying a Toyota Prius

It’s not the Prius, it’s the smug, of which there is plenty in the article. I don’t care what kind of car a person drives, but anybody that smug has earned a punch in the face. Oh and also the lack of acceleration, I don’t know if it’s the car or the drivers but I’ve seen many a Prius get blown off the line by laden 10 wheelers. Getting stuck behind them sucks.

Drive whatever you want, so long as you don’t tell you’re a superior person because of it.

My DNA may, or may not be superior to most.
Choice of transport may be an indicator, of what, I do not know.

I find your owning a Pious is a micro-aggression against my owning an ICE powered car.

If the only reason you buy a car is to get you from Here to There, then I guess a Prius makes sense. But for me, a car is something more. It is a public statement of how I feel about myself, the pride I take in my accomplishments, and the presence I want to project to others on the road.

Which is why I'd take a Ferrari over a BMW over a Camaro over a Nissan over a Mini over a Prius.

“FWIW, I did a back of the Excel trade study, assuming 15,000 miles driving a year and a 10 year economic life, cost of money at 6%, comparing the Prius and Corolla. The break-even point is gasoline at $6.00 per gallon. “

That’s about right since a Toyota Corolla, which is a better driving car than a Prius, can be had for $7,000 less than a Prius. That’s a lot of gas (about 75,000 miles).

I don’t understand the premise of being criticized for buying a Prius.

Who was critical and why would one care?

It is a combination of thoughtless, "because FEELZ" environmental-wacko virtue signaling, and conspicuous consumption: given the break-even point as pointed out elsewhere on the thread, would be $6.00/gal gas.

Incidentally, the weenies who humblebrag over the environmental chops they get over this car, always decline to talk about the toxic metals in the batteries.

That simply adds a bit of fun to it! We haven't put my Purple Heart tags on it, but I want to! But does have an E G&A and a CIB.

No, they aren’t hybrid fuels. They are hybrid battery/engine cars. The engine charges the batteries.

This will help: The hybrid versions of the Camry and Fusion cars should average 10-15 MPG over the standard engine version. That means 38 MPG instead of 25 MPG.

Should gas shoot up, that sort of economy makes sense, but when gas is cheap, people won't typically pay a premium for the future money savings.

Buying a used hybrid now could make sense, if we thought gas could edge back up. Someone else took the hit on the depreciation, while the batteries appear to last 15+ years, in practice.

Back in 2001 we lived in Orange Cty, Ca. and were having to drive up to Hollywood and the LA area on a very regular basis. Went to the Toyota dealer to look at the new Echo. When we got there they bent our arm every which way to instead buy the new world saving Prius.

Let me see,,,,,,,,,,,,, Prius,,,, $22,000 and the Echo $12,000. WE drove out in the Echo. The car got great mileage,,,, for 2 years. The new ???I think, variable valve timing, must have went on the blink because the mileage went from 37-42 down to 27 period!!!!! Took it back to the Toyota dealer and they said it ran fine. Sold it and bought a 2003 Mini Cooper. Last car I ever got a speeding ticket with. :<))) Never looked at another Toyota.

Would you expect criticism for selecting strawberry ice cream?

The Prius is among the many possible selections available to fit the transportation needs of many people. Some will select Prius and some will not select a Prius. We may assume that many people are as pleased with their selections as your wife is with her selection.

Our Prius 'V' model is the wagon, seldom actually recognized as a PRIUS!

Looks like most any crackerjack box.

And I forgot to add that I assume we all have seen the stats when a BMW 325 and Prius are put out on a race track and told to drive at 65 the BMW will get better gas mileage.

Other vehicles have a similar problem. For example, I drive a Subaru and am considered a flaming liberal lesbian on occasion in these parts.

Actually, I am a flaming liberal lesbian. But there's no need to assume that.

Thank you. Those batteries are the Achilles’ heel with hybrids. People do not factor in the replacement cost when they talk about the cost of owning those cars. In addition, the environmental impact of all those spent batteries needs to be considered.

The Toyota battery has a 100K mile warranty. Replacement cost for the battery is $4,000.

If I bought a Prius, I'd get rid of it before it hits 100K miles.

I had a bit of fun showing my pickup driving friends that a Prius 0-60 is the same or better than most work type pickups.

Gas is closer to $3.00 in my neck of the woods. That’s why I wrote at LEAST double.
