Data shows the number of adults with the disease has risen by 1.5 million in the past ten years,
with GPs now reporting 3.6 million patients aged 17 and older on their records.

There has been an increase of 137,000 in the past year alone – largely due to an explosion in cases of Type 2 diabetes.

Experts warn that the debilitating condition is now reaching crisis proportions.

Every day in the UK, 65 people die prematurely from diabetes while hundreds more battle lifechanging complications

You are exactly right. But the problem is more complex than that. The human body is an extraordinarily complex system of chemical reactions, and simple bromides simply don't reflect that.

For example "energy in = energy out, so just exercise more and eat less to lose weight". Sounds quite reasonable, but it is also hilariously wrong. Why? Because if you do that, after you lose the first pound of fat or two your body changes its metabolic regime to conserve the fat, often at the expense of muscle tissue. That's why you cannot maintain that activity (depending on your body type of course).

Which brings up body type. Not just tall & skinny vs. short & thick, but in nearly ALL aspects of your physical self. Including metabolic function. I have come to believe that humans are kind of like dogs in that we consist of endless numbers of "breeds" whose only really common element is smarter than other animals and the ability to procreate with each other. That's why most Irish look like other Irish, So. Africans look like other So. Africans, but Irish and So. Africans are not even remotely similar in appearance. But an Irish man can make a baby with a So. African woman. What the kid looks like is anybody's guess.

Some people (like me) simply cannot eat grains and breads, it makes me perpetually mildly ill. Some people can.

Those that insist that they know best how ALL people should eat are stupid, arrogant fools.

UK should modify its diet away from grains and towards animal proteins and animal (not vegetable) fat. I bet the diabetes rate would begin to crater. That diet seems to work well for the purebred No. European "breed".

Its a horrible disease as we all are walking around with it. So know they have it and avoid treatment as the don’t want the stigma of taking shots. There is a new Insulin product named Afrezza by MannKind Corporation. Its an Inhaled Insulin product and you use it at mealtime instead of injections.

Keeps Blood glucose in line and helps to reduce the dreaded AIC that most doctors want to see at 6.00 or below. Its only been on the market for about 19 months so most doctors really are just learning about Afrezza.

In the United States, we’ve grown to be a lazy and sedentary population. Lazy because the darn fast food and casual/family dining industry have such a massive presence, coupled with so much packaged and processed foods in the markets. We cook less from scratch than a generation ago. We need to eat real food.

And sedentary. We’ve so many modern conveniences and toys, we are not active as we once were. The activities for the young people seem to be going to the mall and eating fast food. We need to not watch TV and get exercise - even a brisk walk helps each day. But, also many jobs require people to be less active by sitting at a desk.

I love my carbs, and sugars. But, I eat that stuff in moderation and do eat more real foods. And exercise 4 or 5 times a weeks 60-90 minutes. My one bad habit is smoking, been doing so since my teens. Amazingly thus far, it has not affected my health.

I believe that type 2 is caused by a systemic fungal infection that attacks the pancreas. In the Israel medical it is not called type two, but infectious diabetes.

The body becomes susceptible when the microclimate or gut bacteria is sugar based from eating unnatural levels of sugar caused by by a number of issues.

A proper gut bacteria balance is based on lactobacteria, not sugar eaters like candita. There are a number of factors that contribute to this imbalance, an often overlooked one is the enzyme blockers in food preservatives. Without enzymes, lactobacteria can not digest your food for you, and it leaves the digestive mass to yeasts.

Refined foods favor yeasts as well as high sugar foods.

Naturally fermented foods like sourkraut. yhogurt, olives Kimchee along with vegetables and whole grains over refined foods will turn your gut around and at the same time greatly improve your immune system.

Candita does not fight fungus in your life gut, it IS a fungus.

I switched my diet a few years ago, lost a lot of weight and never looked back. Note that this is a slow process, an if you like most industrialized societies are a walking candida infection switching to a normal diet takes time and care.

Cold turkey from refined foods is unpleasant. Start with increasing complex carbs, veggies, and decreasing refined carbs laced with preservatives and soda pop.

Importantly, a lot of people are also being diagnosed as “borderline” diabetic. So, in *addition* to getting a better diet, cutting out most carbs, there are several supplements that will help keep blood sugar, triglycerides (blood fat), total cholesterol and ‘bad’ cholesterol, and blood pressure under control.

For all of the above, one of the best things you can do is to get close to your ideal weight. Excess fat makes everything harder.

Drug stores sell cheap blood sugar monitors OTC. It’s the test strips that are expensive. But you must have and use one of these to know if what you are doing is working or not. Here is a simple chart to know where you stand:

Herb - Gymnema Sylvestre

Herb - Cassia (common) Cinnamon. Still debates, but appears to work for some people.

Two that are important to add:

Vitamin B-1, ordinary daily dose. It helps protect the kidneys from albumin loss associated with the excessive urination found in diabetics.

R-Alpha Lipoic Acid. (Specifically the ‘R’ type). Promotes circulation in the extremities, which can be inhibited by diabetes.

There is a very high incidence of type II diabetes in southeast Asia, Egypt and among the mooselimbs in general. These countries eat enormous amounts of white rice in contrast to how much protein they take in. Protein and fats modify the effect of carbohydrates in the blood stream.

Many countries cannot afford to eat more protein. Here in the US, the population in general can attempt to avert type II by keeping their carbs closer to what is recommended as a type II carb count, which is around 60 carbs per day.

Think one piece of bread is usually 13 carbs, a light beer is 5 carbs, and you do the math for what you eat.

My family has no diabetes but we have always been a protein and vegetables type group. Some families have diabetes genetically but it can be averted even then with carb consciousness.

Thank you. I agree with you, especially with your final sentence I quoted above. Some groups and some people can handle the excess carb load better than others; but, on the whole, humans evolved eating meat and fat. Agriculture, with the resultant consumption of grains, arose very late in human history.

The chronic diseases of today: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer et al, were not always prolific, but relatively rare. What has changed is our diet -- not our genome.

Yes we have, but the volumes of sugar consumed have increased almost ten fold in the last century.

In 1900, we averaged 17 pounds of sugar a year. We are now pushing 150 annually.

You are correct, but I would go a little further. Cut the carbohydrates, all carbohydrates, to a minimum and increase the healthy fats. This diabetes epidemic started when we began to fear fats and replaced them with carbs. We have been given completely incorrect dietary advice for 40 years now.

Agreed. Type II is insulin resistance and disregulation is not a lack of insulin. The treatment is not additional insulin. This increases insulin resistance and requires even greater doses over time.

Type II is curable with a switch to a ketogenic or very low carbohydrate (VLC) diet. The results are rapid with disease reversal beginning within a couple of weeks.

Long term insulation resistance leads to damage to the blood brain barrier (BBB) and brain iron accumulation. Long term damage to the BBB leads to Parkinson's, Huntington's and Alzheimer's disease. There is some basis to genetics in a portion of the population, however the majority of the disease progression is the result of metabolic disorders and brain insulin disregulation. Further, insulin resistance leads to vascular inflammation. Markers are increased triglycerides and small particle LDLs and decreased levels of HDLs. These levels reverse rapidly with a ketogenic or VLC diet.

You make excellent points. I wish doctors understood that diabetes is almost 100% curable if it hasn’t done too much ancillary damage. (some do, but very few). I fear that the huge money made from diabetes treatments leads to little motivation by pharma/medical system to implement a dietary approach. The treatment regimen today is barbaric.

My Wife (neurologist) and I have been looking at a very rare genetic disorder that leads to rapid iron accumulation in children to young adults. It is both a horrific and tragic disorder that leads to death in the late teens (if not earlier). From the research, we were searching for other pathways besides the Pyruvate Cycle to directly "feed" the brain. The disruption of the pyruvate cycle in these children is similar to the effects of long term metabolic syndrome (except they were starving to death). The pyruvate cycle (sugars) is a 27 step metabolic process. Any disruption in one of those steps leads to the beginning of metabolic damage to the brain. We found the secondary pathway (carnitine shuttle) was the key to feeding the brain and avoiding issues with insulin disregulation.

Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) follow only a two step process and cross the BBB with this secondary pathway. The steps are fairly simple with digestion and routing from the portal vein to the liver and then the bloodstream. From there, the MCFAs are available for the carnitine shuttle.

MCFAs can be found in foods such as coconut and palm oils. Coconut is not complete MCFA, but is adequate. We were especially interested in Caprylic Acid (surprisingly available on Amazon). The brain utilizes approximately 20% of human energy. Without available energy (Insulin Resistance and disruption of the Pyruvate Cycle) damage to the BBB and brain occur. We believe this can be stabilized, however are uncertain how much the damage can be reversed. There has been some promising research that indicates the BBB begins to repair itself on a VLC diet rich in MCFAs. Further, a couple of affordable supplements have also been shown to repair the BBB and remove the accumulated iron in the brain. The treatment is only viable longterm if the insulin resistance is reversed.

Well, I'm posting some links to presentations on this issue. I have been reading lots of the new research and information on this topic and nutrition topics.

I was shocked to hear a number of Doctors talking about the lack of training in the field of nutrition, and also the lack of focus on the importance of the diet in the treatment of diabetes. The focus was mostly on prescriptions etc.

In fact, I apparently learned more about nutrition in my high school Home Economics class. Let me tell you that the current low fat high carb diet is a recipe for disastrous health consequences. This recipe had it's roots in the 7 country study by Ansel Keyes. Turns out that he simply ignored the 20 or so countries that didn't fit his theory.

The scientific controversy along towards the end of the 70s was settled by the Government, and the USDA food pyramid was published, but it was quite contrary to what I was taught about nutrition.

Go back to basics, don't eat the processed foods, avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners, eat eggs, cheese, milk, cream and butter from grass fed cattle if possible. Get adequate protein- Meat and Bacon are fine - avoid the chemicals/nitrates if possible. Avoid corn oils and other vegetable oil that are heavily processed. Use Olive Oil that has simply been pressed.

The ratio of Triglycerides to HDL is a better indicator of heart health than the Cholesterol. Saturated Fat is needed to raise your HDL - the so called good cholesterol. Sugars and starches can raise your triglycerides.

Sugar is 50% fructose. HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)is 55% fructose. Yes, fructose is in fruits, but fruit also has fiber, and not nearly the number of grams that is in so many processed foods. Fructose is processed differently from many other carbs - it is processed similar to alcohol.

Cirrhosis of the Liver = fatty liver from Alcohol. Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ( NAFLD) = fatty liver from fructose. This is a disease that was practically non-existent when I was child, but we now have youngsters getting this disease.

So the USDA publishes lousy nutrition advice, subsidizes wheat and corn using taxpayer dollars. Then we have to use taxpayer dollars to take care of all these sick people. Raising taxes on sodas and sugary beverages is being suggested.

End the subsidies so that HFCS isn't cheaper than sugar, and stop spending money spreading inaccurate diet advice makes more sense to me.
